Description

J. B. BREWSTER.
Supporting Bar for Vehicles.
No. 95,642. Patented Oct. 1-2, 1869..
fitnited fittin fitment Gtjiflirr.
Letters Patent No. 95,642, dated October 12, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SUPP ORTING-BARS I'OR VEHICLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
bed, made on my improved plan.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention has for its object so to strengthen all kinds of supporting-bars for wheeled vehicles and sleighs, that is to say, axle-beds, bolsters, felloes, and sleigh-runners and knees, that the same will not be liable to split or break, nor to yield in the direction in. which the greatest strain is applied.
The invention consists in interposing in such supporting-bars vertical metallic plates, whioh, being set edgeways in the direction of the strain, will strengthen the bars to avery considerable extent; thereby, many accidents to property, as well as to life and limb, will be prevented.
A, in the drawing, represents-an axle-bed of suitable form and size.
It is made of wood, either in two pieces, we, or of one piece, grooved by a saw, so that a metal plate, b, can be put vertically between such two pieces or cheeks of wood. The pieces are then clamped together in suitable manner. I
Bolsters are made in the same way, as also sleighrunners, which will thereby be made almost indestructible.
On some kinds of wheels the felloes may be made in the same manner, byreceiving vertical metal plates between two checks or rings of wood.
Instead of having but one plate 11, every such supporting-bar may have two o r more of thesame.
Having thus described my'invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The axle-beds and other supporting-bars of wheeled vehicles or sleighs, provided with metal plates 1), which are interposed vertically between two layers or cheeks of wood, substantially as herein, shown and described.
