UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID REES, OF JOPLIN, MISSOURI.
CHURN.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, DAVID REES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in churns and more especially in the dashers therefor.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed and efiicient churn having a quadruple motion whereby butter is produced in five minutes or less.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for mounting the churn dasher driving shaft to provide for the ready separation and assembling of the parts.
Vith these and other objects in view, the
invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a vertical section through the churn body with the dashers and the operating mechanism therefor in elevation; Fig. 2 is a Vertical section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4; is a similar view taken on the line ll of Fig. 1; Figs. 5 and 6 are also horizontal sections taken on the lines 55 and 66 respectively of Fig. 1; Fig. 7 is a fragmentary side elevation; and, Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the dashers detached.
In the embodiment illustrated a churn body 1 is shown which may be composed of any suitable or desired material and is provided with a removable tight fitting cover 2 having a central aperture 3 therein for the passage of a dasher operating shaft to be described.
An approximately inverted V shaped supporting frame at is pivotally connected at its free ends to the opposite sides of the churn body 1 preferably near its upper end. This supporting member is preferably composed of a strip of metal about an inch wide more or less and is preferably pivoted near one corner of each end as shown clearly in Fi Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 510,167.
7, and the other corner of each end thereof is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 5 which opens through the edge of said end and is designed to engage laterally extending studs as 6 which project from the opposite sides of the churn body and which are arranged in approximately the same horizontal plane as the pivots of said supporting member. Slits as 7 extend inward from the free ends of the member 4 intermediately of its width for a suitable distance to provide for the lateral yielding of the slotted ends of said member when it is desired to lower the supporting frame. Securing hooks as S are pivotally connected at one end to the outer face of the free ends of said frame at and are designed to engage the studs as 6 to lock the frame in operative position.
A horizontal partition 9 is connected at its opposite ends to the side members of the frame t preferably at a point about midway thereof. This partition is provided with a recess or aperture 10 which opens through one side edge of the partition and is adapted to receive the dasher operating shaft. A latch member 11 is pivotally connected at one end to said partition and is provided.
intermediately of its ends on its inner edge with a notch or recess 12 which registers with the recess 10 in the partition when in closed position to securely hold the shaft against lateral movement and yet permit 1t to be freely rotated therein. The free end of this latch member is connected with the partition by any suitable catch means which is here shown in the form of a pin which extends through registering apertures in the free end of the latch member 11 and through the partition.
The apex of the member t is preferably made blunt as shown and is provided with a slot 13 opening laterally in the same direc tion as the aperture 10 for the reception of the upper end of the dasher shaft as will be hereinafter described. A latch member 14 is hingedly connected at one end to one side member of the frame at and is provided at its free end with a laterally extending catch member 15 which is adapted to fit between the side members of the frame at and be secured in operative position by a fastening pin 16 or any other suitable means.
A cross bar 17 is secured to one side of said frame preferably near its upper end and on the outer face thereof is rotatably mounted a large crown gear 18 havingan operating crank handle 19 on its outer face.
A dasher shaft 20 extends through the aperture 3 in the top 2 and is provided at its lower end with a dasher 21 removably fixed thereto and designed to rotate therewlth. At the upper end of said shaft is fixed a fly wheel 22 and a cog gear 23 is also fixed to said shaft adjacent said fly wheel and is adapted to mesh with the crown gear on the supporting frame when the parts are assembled in operative position. A sleeve 2 1 is loosely mounted on the shaft 20 and is preferably made two-thirds the length of said shaft and carries at its lower end a dasher 25 fixed thereto and adapted to rotate therewith. Near the upper end of the sleeve a cog wheel 26 is fixed and is adapted to mesh with the crown gear 18 at a point diametrically opposite where the cog 23 engages said crown gear to provide for the rotation of said cogs in opposite directions by the operation of the crown gear. A fly wheel 27 is fixed to the sleeve 2 1 below the cog 26 having a collar 28 adapted to rest on the upper face of the partition 9, said partition being arranged the proper distance from the upper end of the frame 1- to space the cog wheel 26 in position to mesh with the crown gear 18.
The dashers 21 and 25 which are attached to the shaft 20 and sleeve 2% respectively are similarly constructed and hence one only will be described in detail. The blades of these dashers are preferably struck from a single piece of sheet metal approximately in the form of a Maltese cross having the cor- 11ers thereof rounded and two of the blades 29 and 30 at diametrically opposite sides have one side edge 31 bent upwardly at right angles thereto and the other edge 32 bent downwardly and each provided with one or more apertures for the passage of cream therethrough. The upwardly bent edges of these two blades are arranged on opposite sides as are also the downwardly bent edges thereof. A sleeve 33 extends through the center of the blade and is disposed at an oblique angle thereto, the sleeve of the dasher 21 being detachably fixed to the lower end of the shaft 20 and the sleeve of the dasher 25 being similarly fixed to the lower end of the sleeve 2%. It will thus be obvious that when the dasher 21 is removed from the shaft 20 the sleeve 24 with the parts mounted thereon may be slipped freely off the lower end of the dasher for cleaning, repairing or other purposes. The peculiar arrangement of the blades at an oblique angle to the sleeve and the bending of the side edges of two of said blades upwardly and rlnwnwvnwrllw v mrnnr-l-ivnlv rn'nvirdr-m 'Fnr the ing rotated in opposite directions carrying with them the dashers mounted thereon causing the cream to be thoroughly agitated which causes the butter to separate quickly from the milk this being the principal object of the invention.
To arrange the parts of the churn in operative position the frame 4 is first swung downwardly and the shaft with the dashers mounted thereon is inserted within the body of the churn the cover 2 being fitted tightly over the top thereof. The frame 4 is then swung into upright position and the sleeve 24 is elevated and engaged with the recess in the partition 9 below the fiy wheel 27 whereby said sleeve is supported in proper posi tion to space the dasher 25 the proper distance above the dasher 21 and also to bring the cog wheel 26 into mesh with the crown gear 18 the upper end of the shaft 20 having been engaged with the recess in the apex of the member 1 at a point below the cog wheel 23 whereby said wheel is caused to mesh with the crown gear at a point diametrically opposite the point where the wheel 26 meshes therewith. The latch members 11 and 14 are then swung inwardly and secured in closed position to hold the shaft in operative position and the churn is then ready for use.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention;
1. In a churn the combination of a churn body, a bail shaped supporting member pivotally connected at its free ends to said body and having slots opening through said ends and extending longitudinally of said member, laterally projecting studs mounted on the churn body for en 'agement by said slots to support said bail s aped member in uptese cross and having their corners rounded and a sleeve extending centrally through said dasher and secured thereto at an oblique angle.
4. A churn dasher comprising blades arranged approximately in the form of a Maltese cross and having their corners rounded and a sleeve extending centrally through said dasher and secured thereto at an oblique angle, two of said diametrically opposite blades having their side edges bent upardly and downwardly in opposite directions.
5. A churn dasher comprising a plate having a sleeve extending therethrough at an oblique angle thereto.
6. A churn dasher comprising a plate having members extending at angles from opposite faces thereof and a shaft connected therewith at an oblique angle.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID REES.
