Description

anat saai strut @Wim THOMAS MCOREARY, on MATTEAWAN, NEW YORK, AssIeNon TO H'IMSELF, GEORGE,
M. sULLiVAN, AND JOHN MCOREARY, OF SAME PLACE.
Laim Patent No. 94,017, dated Auguaai, 1869.
, IMPROVEMENT l:Nr UMBRELLAS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
VTo all whom it mag/concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS MCOREARY, of Matteawan, in the county of Dutchess, and State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description l thereof, which will venablepothers skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beingv had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specifi cation.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction of frames for umbrellas, whereby it is designed to provide a more simple and durable construction than the present arrangement, and also better adapted for restoring the ribs or braces when broken.
Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of the rib and brace-holding devices, showing also the staff-ribs and braces;
Figure 2 represents a horizontal section, taken on the line :c x of iig. l; and
Figure` 3 represents a modiiied arrangement of the runner and top notch.
Similailetters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
For connecting the ribs to the top notch upon the handle and the braces to the runner, I construct the said top notch and runner with radial pins @projecting from the sleeve or ring l), through which the handle passes, and I bend .the ends of the ribs 'and braces lto form eyes thereon, which eyes I slip on the said pins, as shown in the drawings, and then place guardlings or collars c around the said sleeve or ring b and l pins, to prevent the braces or ribs from slipping o.
These guard-rings or collars may be 'enlarged parts of the runner d, or fixed sleeves above the top notch for the ribs, and may be soldered to the'rings 11, after Ysecuring the ribs or braces, or they may be detachably connected by screws e, as represented in iig. 3.
I propose to make the connections detachable, to
facilitate repairing, or substituting new-rings or braces for broken ones, which may befdone by disconnecting them by removing the screws 'and slipping' therunner,orY other sleeves to which the guard-ring may bev attached, away from the pinfholding rings b.
By this mode of securing the ribs and'braees, I am enabled to use smaller wires, as they are not weakened by iiattenng and perforating; and to save this attening and perfor-ating for the connection of the braces to the ribs, I bend the'braces around, forming eyes' f, at the point-s forthe connection of the braces, which I hook into them, closing the hooked ends so as not to become unhooked, as clearly shown.
This mode of securing the ribs and braces is much stronger and moredurable than the common way, as well as cheaper.
. The holding-rings b, with pins, may be formed best connected to the holding-rings, substantially as specied. I
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 16th day of June, 1869.
THOMASv MCCREARY.
