PIERRE BIRKENSTOCK, 0F LA-RBRESLE, FRANCE.
METHOD FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF BATTING AN'ID YARN OF RAMIE.
No Drawing.
Specification ofi Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PIERRE, BIRKENSTOOK, citizen of France, residing at 43 Rue de Bordeaux, LArbresle, Rhone, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Methods for the Manufacture of Batting and Yarn of Ramie, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a method concerning more particularly the chemical treatment and the subsequent operations to which the decorticated ramie fibers are submitted in view of obtaining batting and yarn capable of being substituted for batting and yarn of cotton.
The batting and yarn of ramie obtained according to my invention possess the appearance, softness and elasticity of cotton together with a strength much greater than that of the latter, the batting having also the suppleness, fineness, curlmess and all properties of cotton batting while the yarn 1s 30% more resisting than cotton yarn and costs half the price of the same.
My method of treating the decorticated ramie is the following, the numbers cited being only indicated by way of example:
(a) 25 kilograms carbonate of soda are placed into 1,000 liters water, the solution is brought to-ebullition and then oured over 100 kgr. raw decorticated ramie which is soaked therein for one hour.- The bath is then drawn out and the material washed in cold water. i
(b) 15 liters-caustic soda at 42 Baum are poured into 980 liters of water, 5 liters of sulforicinate of soda at 50% are added and mixed therewith. The 100 kilogr. of
\ ramie treated as under (a) are then placed into the solution which is caused to boil for ten hours. The bath is then drawn out and the material is washed first in cold water containing 1% sulfuric acid and then in pure cold water. Thereafter the material is dried preferably by means of a centrifugal. machine.
(a The-ramie treated as described being drie is cut to the length of the fibers to be obtained and passed to the opening machine. The material does not require any combing so that no waste is produced.
(d) When the material is delivered from the opening machine, it is soaked for two hours into a bath containing 250 liters caustic soda. at 42 Baum in 750 liters cold abovementioned amounts and proportions may be varied within certain limits without departing from the scope of my invention. Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A method for obtaining ramie yarn,
consisting in treating the raw decorticated ramie in a solution of carbonate of soda in water, and washing the same; boiling said material in a solution of caustic soda in water containing sulforicinate of soda, washing the same in cold water containing sulfuric acid and then in pure cold water, and drying the same; cutting the dried material so obtained to the length desired for the fibers and passing the same to the opening machine; treating the material in a solution of caustic soda, washing it in water containing sulfuric acid, then in cold water, and
drying'the same; treating the material so obtained in the spreading or lap machine,
and carding and spinning the same.
2. A-method for obta1ning ramie yarn, consisting in soakin 100 kgr. of the raw decorticated ramie or one hour in 1,000 liters water containing 25 kgr. carbonate of soda and washing the same in cold water; boiling said material for ten hours in a bath formed of 980-liters water containing 15 liters caustic soda at 42 Baum and 5 liters sulforicinate of soda, and washing the mate rial first in cold water containing 1% sulfuric acid, then in pure cold water, and dry ing the same; cutting the dried material'so obtained to the length desired for the fibers and passing the same to the opening machine; soaking the material for two hours in a bath containing 250 liters caustic soda at 42 Baum in 750 liters cold water, washing the same in water=containing 1 liter sul-.
furic acid in 100 liters Water, then in pure cold water, and drying the same; treating the material so obtained in the spreading or lap machine and carding and spinning the same'and boiling the yarn obtained in asolution containing 500 grams gray soap in 100 liters Water.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PIERRE BIRKENSTOCK.
