UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR JOHN LEI-I AND ELLIS CLAUD HELLICK, OF NAZARETH, PENNSYLVANIA.
DETAGHABLE HANDLE FOR BOTTLES AND THE LIKE.
Application filed March 19, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR JOHN Lion and Emma CLAUD HELLICK, citizens of the United States, residing at Nazareth, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Detachable Handle for Bottles and the Like,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to removable ha 1O dles for bottles and the like and its object is to provioe a simple durable and efficient device of this character which is cheap to manufacture and which can be readily placed in position upon a bottle or jar so as to permit said bottle or jar to be used as a pitcher.
A further object is to provide a handle attachment which can be readily adjusted to fit bottles, etc., of diifereut sizes.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention cons in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
in said drawings:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bottle having the present improvements applied thereto. Fig. is an enlarged transverse section through the band of the attachment and showing the clamping bolt in elevation. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the interengaging'portions of the band.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a band, preferably of metal, and having folded edge portions constituting guide flanges 2, there being a tongue 3 extending from one end of the band, and another tongue A extending from the other end thereof. Said tongue et is designed to slide within the guides 2 and has a longitudinal slot 5 therein for the reception of a clamping bolt 6 the head 7 of which is soldered or otherwise fastened to the tongue 3, while the threaded portion of the bolt is designed to be engaged by a wing nut- 8 or the like. This wing nut preferably bears upon a washer 9 which in turn contacts with the band. The folded edge portions of the band are preferably spaced from the band to form guides only at the points where the tongue 4 is received. At all other places the edge portions can be pressed against the hand as indicated in Fig. 2. A loop 10 pref- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. *7, 1909.
Serial No. 484,458.
erably formed of a strip of metal having folded edges, is soldered or otherwise secured to the band 1 and extends transversely thereof, this loop constituting the grip portion of the attachment.
In using the device herein described the 4 nut 8 is loosened so as to permit the bolt 6 to slide freely within the slot 5 and thus allow the diameter of the band to be increased to such an extent as to permit the ready insertion of a bottle A, or the like, thereinto. After the bottle has been placed in position the band is drawn tightly therearound and secured by means of the wing nut 8. By holding the grip 10 said bottle can then be used as a pitcher.
A device such as herein described is especially useful in connection with a milk bot-- tle, although it is to be understood that the same may be used equally as well with other forms of bottles, jars, etc.
Obviously various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of the invention.
lVhat is claimed is 1. A handle attachment for bottles or the like comprising an annularly adjustable band means for locking the band in adjusted position, and a grip immovably connected to the band.
2. A handle attachment for bottles or the like comprising a band bent into circular form, said band having marginal guides, a tongue at one end of the band and slidable within the guides, and a grip carried by the band.
A handle attachment for bottles or the like comprising a band bent into circular form, said band having marginal guides, a tongue atone end of the band and slidable within the guides, said tongue having a longitudinal slot, means extending from the band and through the slot for securing the band in adjusted posit-ion, and a grip secured upon the band.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto afiixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR JOHN LEH. ELLIS CLAUD HELLICK.
