BOTTLE-CAP.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whomit may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN S. ALsToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlantic City, in the county of Atlantic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Caps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the;

same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to caps for bottles and jars, and has for its object to provide a device of this class which is simple in construction and cheap and easy to manufacture. r i P With this object in view my invention consists in the novel construction ofthe cap, and also in the combination of the bottle or jar and cap.

Referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure 1. is a vertical sectional view through neck of bottle or jar showin cap in position. Fig. 2. is a horizontal sectional view through same on line-22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3. is a bottom plan view of cap, and Fig. 4. is a fragmentary sectional view showing portion of neck and cap.

Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures, in which:

1, indicates the neck of the bottle or jar and 2 indicates the cap. The neck 1 is provided near its top with an annular groove 3 accommodating a ring or gasket 4 of rubber or other suitable material. tance below the groove 3 is ashoulder 5 on the neck 1, the table 6 of said shoulder slop ing inwardly as shown in Fig. 1.

Referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the cap 2 is provided with preferably three inwardly projecting extensions 7 which as shown in Fig. 1 comprise a rectangular surface 8 and an inclined or sloping surface 9 the remaining portions of the side of the cap between the extensions 7 being smooth so as to slide freely over the ring or gasket.

Having thus described the several parts of A short dismy invention, its operation is as follows: The rlng or gasket 4 18 arranged in the groove 3 in the neck 1, and in order to close the jar or bottle, the cap 2 is passed over the mouth of the receptacle and pressed down into posi tion shown in Fig. 1. This operation causes the inclined surfaces 9 to engage the ring or gasket 4i and press into the same in passing over the said ring or gasket, while the smooth portions of the cap between the said extensions allow the ring or gasket to expand while the said extensions are passing over the same. After the extensions have passed beyond the ring or gasket the ring or gasket is engaged by the flat surface 8 in which position the cap is firmly held to the bottle or jar.

In practice, the location of the groove 3 varies slightly on the bottles; as for instance as shown in Fig. 4. In this event the rectangular surface 8 of the extensions 7 passes beyond the bottom of the ring or gasket 4, but as the closure is effected between the ring or gasket and the wall of the cap, the relative location of the extensions 7 and the ring or gasket 4 is immaterial.

In order to remove the cap, an implement is simply inserted between the lower edge of the cap and the shoulder 5 on the neck 1 and the cap forced off.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the UnitedStates, is:

The combination with a bottle, jar or the like provided. with an annular groove in the neck thereof, of a resilient ring or gasket in said groove, a cap having a series of inwardly projecting extensions in the side thereof for locking engagement with the said ring or gasket, the portions of the side of the cap between the inwardly projecting extensions being smooth to slide freely over said ring or gasket, the lower surfaces of said extensions being inclined to facilitate the passing of said extensions over the said ring or gasket.
