FOLDING CHECK-BOOK.
Application led September 8 `useful lmprmements in Folding Checkliooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in folding check books of the class wherein a pa'l of check blanks is removably secured to a folding holder or cover.
Among the. objects of the invention are to provide a book ofxthis character which may be folded into small compass so as to tit conveniently in pocket or bagg' wherein each check shall have a stub extension at the side; wherein, when the book is opened, the check portions of the leaves will he iiat against a supporting back without fold or crease, and, when the book is closed, the checks shall be so held that they will not sag down below the cover, andwhereinthe cover shall be sp supported that it Will not` easily break or crack.
To this end the invention consists in the features of consti-notion, combination and ar; rangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification; Figure l is a peri spective vien` of the improved'check book opened for use; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same partly folded, and Fig. 3 is a top view of the book when folded and closed.
In the drawings is shown a "holder of leather, cloth, or other foldable material having a stiftened back portion or under-board 2, to which is hinged at the right end a stiffened top portion or upper-board 3 and at the left end a stiifened flap 4. The hinges 5 and G by which theend ortions are hinged to the back consist pre erably of the unstiifened, flexible fabric of the'holder. The top portion 3 is of approximately the same length as the back portion; and the flap, which folds down over the top portion, is enough longer than the check stubs to be attached to it, as hereinafter described, to allosvv it to kbe buttoned down upon the top member 3, as shown in Fig. 3..
. The flap i is formed with a pocket 7 to re-x ceive the backing strip 8 of a pad of checkleaves. Each check-leaf has a check. portion 9 at the right and a stub portion 10 at the Specification of LetterspPatent.

left and is perforated or weakened along the it their left or stub ends the check-leaves are -bound together upon a. short backing strip S of stiffer material, which is adapted to be insertedinto the pocket, as shownv in the drawings. The
' pocket is arranged at such distance from the hinge 6 that, when the backing strip is inserted into the pocket, the check leaves-Will lie upon the holder. With their stubs upon the iiap i on one side of the hinge, and their check portions on the back 2 on the other side of the hinge, with the line of perforations 11 between them coincident with the hinge. y
The upper board 3 of the holder is formed upon the outside.\vith a pocket 12 adapted to receive a small deposit book 13. The. mouth of thepocket is so positioned that. When the Hap 1s folded down as shown in Fig. 3, thev deposit book will lie in line'with, and close to. the bound stub portions of the check pad, and the outer end of the flap. which is fastened down upon the outside of the pocket by means of the'coperating fas! 14 and 15, Willbe supported by the book so that it willnot become cracked by being pressed down over the stub end of the check pad. It Will be seen from the drawings that the mouth of the pocket -12 lies toward. the free end of the top portion 3, so that, .When the iiap is folded down and fastened, thedepositbook cannot drop or be removed from the pocket. p
In use the pad of check leaves is removbacking stri Sinto the pocket 7 The stubl portions Wil then lie upon. the flap ant the check portions upon the back Z of the holder, with the' weakened line 11 coincident with the hinge 6. Thus when the cover isl folded, as shown in Fig. 3, the check 'leaveswill be folded along the line 11, andl the check portions 9 and stub portions 10 will remain uncreased and unfolded. And, Q
when the book is opened for use, the check. portions Will liesnaooth and fiat against the supporting back 2 and may be Written on as readily as if the pad had never been folded.
lVhen entries are to be made'with the bookk 105 further support for' the l checks may be had by folding theleaf 3 4back under the back portion 2 of the cover.
the top portion 3 is the face of the check 110 held in the hand,
In closing the book first folded over upon r9o 'ably secured upon the iiap by inserting the portions 9, as shown in Fig. Q, and the Hap carrying the stubs 10 is then' folded over upon the to portion 3 and fastened down by means o the fastening devices 14 and 15, as shown in Fig.3. It will be observed' down between the cover portions 2 and 3 when the book is held with one of its side edges down, as shown in Fig. 2. As therel illustrated the check leaves, when folded, will impinge against the free, edge of the top portion at its upper end 16 and beheld thereby from sagging further.
ll claim as my invention: f
1. A folding check book comprising a holder having a back, a top portion foldably secured to the back atone end thereof, and a flap foldably secured to theback at the other end thereof, and a pad of checkleaves having stub portionsat one-end and check portions at the other end, said `pad being removably secured to the iap in such position that the stub portions will lie upon the flap and the check portions upon the back with the line between them coincident with the line of fold between the back and f iap,
the top portion of the 'holder 'folding over upon the check leaves/between the check portions and the stub portions thereof, and extending to the line of fold betweenlthem so as to form a stop VVto prevent the cheek leaves from saggin :2. ln a folding'ceok book the combina- 1ne 11, and form a stop toprevent the 'check portions from sagging` tion, with .a holder having a back, a topportion foldably secured to the back at one end thereof; and a flap foldably secured to of check-leaves having stub portions at one end and check portions at the other end, the
lstub end of said pad being removably seouter side of the pocket with the stub end of the pad opposite the mouth of the pocket.
3. A foldingl check book comprising a fiexible holderl having a stilfened top poru all lie entirely uponv the Vthe back at the other end thereof, of a pad tion at one end, a sti'ened Hap at the other end andan intermediate back. and a pad of check-leaves having stub portions at one end and check portions at the other end, said pad being removably secured to the. flap in such position that the stub portions will lie upon the Hap and the check portions upon the back, with the line between them coinci-l dent with the flexible portion of the holder between the back and iap, the top portion of the holder being of such length that, when folded over upon the check leaves, it will extend to said flexible portion and form a stop to prevent the check leaves from sagging.
In testimon whereof I ailix my signature in presence o two witnesses.
