MOLD FOR DRAIN-PIPE SECTIONS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1999.
Application filed. October 10, 1908. Serial No. 457,064.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEDGEWIOK LEWIS SIMON s, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Mold for Drain-Pipe Sections, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in molds for making drain pipe sections or the like out of concrete or similar material, and relates more particularly to the construction of the parts going to make up the mold and the manner in which these parts are assembled.
The main object of the invention is to provide a mold which may be used for forming pipe sections of various different sizes, without necessitating important changes in the mold itself other than the utilization of different sized lining members.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mold constructed in accordance with my invention, the mold being shown partly disas seinbled; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section through the mold, the parts being assembled and the section being taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the mold, taken on the line 3-43 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4. is a top plan view.
My improved mold includes, primarily, a base serving to support the bottom, sides and ends of the mold proper, the ends being removable therefrom and one or both of the sides being hinged thereto. The bottom is supported above the lower edges of the sides and ends, and the top and lining pieces fit down within the sides and rest directly upon the bottom. In the specific construction illustrated, the base is formed of two transverse members 10, 10, connected by longitudinally-disposed members 11l1, to form an open frame or base, which may, if desired, be reinforced by an additional transverse member 12. The bottom 13 of the mold is supported above the base or platform by a plurality of transversely-extending bars 14, which latter rest directly upon the base or platform. Air may thus circulate beneath the bottom of the mold proper and the latter may readily dry when not in use.
The side members 15, 15 of the mold are hinged directly to the base or platform and may move to a vertical position, as indicated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, or may be swung outwardly so as to lie substantially parallel to the base, as indicated in Fig. 1. These side members when in vertical position, closely engage with the sides of the bottom 13, but extend a short distance beyond the ends of said bottom. Each side member 15 carries a flange or cleat 16 at each end thereof and vertically-disposed along its inner side.
These cleats or flanges, together with the bot tom of the mold, serve to hold in place the removable ends 17 of the mold. The ends 17 rest directly upon the base and are of a width equal to the width of the bottom 13 and closely engage with the ends of the latter. The end pieces 17 are of such thickness that they are firmly bound in place between the flanges or cleats 16 and the ends of the bottom when the side members 15 are in vertical position. When the parts are in assembled position, they are locked against displacement in any suitable manner, as, for instance, by transverse metal bands 18, connected to one side member 15 adjacent the upper end thereof, and adapted to extend across and be secured to the opposite side member by a suitable pin 19.
The mold is especially designed for forming drain pipe sections, which, when assembled, form a complete pipe. The completed pipe is preferably formed with a circular bore and the outer surface of the pipe is preferably polygonal, as, for instance, octagonal. Each section is substantially semicylindrical, and the coacting sections are formed with tongue and groove joints, so as to be more readily held in place when they are assembled to form a complete pipe. A single pipe section is formed at a time in my improved mold, and suitable lining pieces and top are employed to give the pipe section the desired cross sectional form. To form a pipe section for a pipe octagonal in cross section and having a cylindrical bore, I provide two lining strips 20, each extending the full length of the interior of the mold and disposed adjacent the intersection of the bottom and the adjacent side member 15. These removable lining strips may each be formed of a base member 21, one side of such lining pieces and top as will coact to which is inclined at an angle of forty-five degrees to the bottom, and a second or s1de member 22 rectangular in cross section and supported upon the base piece 21. The top of the mold is closed by a cover 23 of such length and width that it may fit into the top of the mold and rest directly upon the upper edges of the lining strips. Intermediate its side edges, the cover may be formed with a semi-cylindrical flange 24:, of a size dependent upon the diameter of the bore of the pipe to be formed, and adjacent each edge of this cylindrical flange may be grooves 25 for forming a flange on the pipe section to correspond with a groove in a similar pipe section along its meeting edge. The outer surface of the cover may be provided with any suitable form of handles 26, to facilitate the raising and lowering of the same.
In the use of my improved mold, I select form the pipe of the desired cross section, and after placing the lining pieces within the mold a predetermined quantity of the concrete, cement, or other material of which the pipe section is to be formed, is poured in. This material comes into engagement with the bottom 13, the ends 17, and the lining strips 20, but does not come into engagement with the side pieces 15 or the base. The material is evenly distributed along the length of the mold, and may, if desired, be forced somewhat toward the sides of the mold, so as to'leave a channel or groove along the middle. The cover 23 is then forced downwardly between the sides and ends until it rests upon thelining strips 20, and the material is caused to assume the desired form. If the mold is made of a material which requires pressure or tamping to give it the desired density, the forcing of the cover member 18 into position will pro duce this desired action.
For forming the pipe sections, I preferably employ a material sufficiently dry to retain its form after it has been pressed or tamped in place. As soon as the forming of the pipe section is completed, the top, side and end walls of the mold are removed, and the detachable bottom 13, together with the lining pieces and the pipe section are also removed. The bottom and lining pieces are left in engagement with the pipe section while the hardening operation is completed and a new bottom and lining is inserted in place in the mold. I provide as many bottoms and linings as may be found necessary.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A mold, including a bottom, side walls unattached to said bottom and hinged along their lower edges below said bottom and engaging with the side edges of the bottom when in their operative position, each of said side walls having an inwardly-directed flange at each end thereof, removable ends extending below said bottom and in engagement with the ends thereof and held in engagement with said bottom by said flanges, removable lining pieces extending longitudinally of the mold and in engagement with said side walls and portions of said bottom, a cover section fitting between said side walls and resting upon said lining pieces and having a portion thereof extending down between said lining pieces, and means connecting said side walls at their upper edges and independent of said cover section.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
