W. W. UNDER-HILL, OF BOSTON,'MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Rate/nt No. 93,567, dated August 10, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT 1N cornnpnnssns.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To yall whom it may concern Be itA known that I, W. W. ,UNDERB1LL, of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Letter-Copying Press; and do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying. drawings, in which- Figure l is a front view of my press.
' Figure 2 is a vertical section of same.
The object of my invention is to produce a lettercopying press which will be quicker in its action than the ordinary screw-press, which will take upless room, not only in its position, but in the operating of the press, and which will allow of the top being used as al table, and a press which requires no lubricating; and
The nat-ure of my invention consists in a platen adjusted above-a table by means of standards with coiled springs, the platen or press being brought ydown upon the copy-book bya lever operated by the foot orhand,
and' the platen heldin any desired position by a wedge,
which also serves for a drawer.
In the 'drawings- A is axtable, supported by legs B B.
D is a platen or press-board, resting upon standards- Upon the standards, above the table A, are coiled springs S S, which serve to keep the platen up from the table.
L is a cross-bar, extending between the lower ends of standards E, and is removable, by being forked at the ends, the fork fitting to a scarfed tongue upon E,
so as to allow of the cross-bar L being easily lifted from the shoulder a, at the foot of standards E. mis a rod, connecting the cross-bar L with lever lIii, which is attached, at the end of'its short arm, to
ar F.
The lever K has notches 'n n, which allow of adjusting the length of the lever in relation to the rod fm.
H is-a wedge, arranged as a drawer, under table A, and its use is to secure the press at any desired position; that is, when, by the action upon the lever K, .the press D is brought downA upon the book, or whatever is upon the tableA, and it is desiredto retain the pressure, it can be accomplished by pushing the wedge in loetweeu the table A and the cross-bar L.
This wedge also serves as a drawer. The notches n n are arranged on an incline, to "i, so that when the ring o, of thc rod m, is removed from the lower notch to a higher, the lever `must be raised. This gives a more acute angle to the-position of the lever, and allows of greater pressure being brought upon D.
In constructing a press of this kind, the springs S S may snkinto an annular groove in the table A, around the standards E; (this will allow the board D to come nearer to the table A;) or they may be attached, below the table A, to the legs, or a convenient place, and act upon the standards.
It may be desirable to employ four standards, instead of two; but the number shown illustratesl my purpose. v
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination and arrangement of platen D, table A, standards E E, springs S S, drawer-wedge H', and lever K, in a letter-press, substantially as d escribed.
2; -Also, the drawer-wedge H, serving as a drawerand a wedge, as herein set fort-h.
Iutestilnony whereof, I have signed my name to this speeificatiomin the presence o f two subscribing
