Description

GHABL'ESA. anfassen, 0F emesse. Laurels..
VENTILATQB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Sept. 21, 11909.
Application led' March 18, 1909. Serial No. 484,386.
ToV all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A.PETERsoN,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, count-y of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
. My invention relates to improvements lin ventilators, and more particularly to aventilator adapted to be inserted in the Walls of a building, the object being to provide a dei vice of this character that shall be neat in appearance andeficient in operation.
A further object of my invention is to provide al ventilator that may be easily removed from its place in the wall for cleansing purposes, and a further object is to provide suitable fastening devices to hold the'ventilator in position. And a still further object is to provide suitable hinged lids for closing the ventilator openings.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. i
lith t-hese objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts all. as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed'out inthe appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming tion, and in which,
Figure 1 is a central vertical section showing my improved ventilator in its preferred form, and Fig. 2 is a section thereof taken on the line a: of Fig. 1 showing a hinged lid in elevation.
Referring now to the drawings 1 designates the wall of the building and 2 the removable rectangular ventilator inserted therein. The ventilator 2 comprises a central member 2,` a top member 3 and a bottom member 4. The central member 2 consists of a horizontal partition 5 having integral rectangular deflectors 6 and 6 eX- tending upwardly and downwardly therefrom respectively and disposed perpendicular thereto. The top member 3 consists of a rectangular top portion T coextensive and parallel with the partition 5 having integral rectangular deflectors 8 extending downa part of this specificawardly therefrom and disposed perpendicu! lar thereto, and the bottom member 4 consists of a rectangular bottomvportion 9 coextensive and parallel with the partition 5 having integral rectangular delectors 10 ex- Itending upwardly therefrom and disposed perpendicular thereto, all of said deflectors `being equally spaced. The deflectors 8 are arranged in the same planes as the deflectors y6 of the partition 5, and the deflectors 10 in the same'planes as the deiectors 6 of said partition, the detlectors 8 and 1() having edges which are parallel with said partition 1 and spaced at a dista-nce therefrom, and the deflectors 6 and 6 having edges also parallel with said partition and spaced at a distance from the portions 7 and 9 respectively. The end portions 11 are integral with the parti tion 5 and the deflectors 6 and 6', as shown in Fig. 2, lthe top and bottom edges thereof being adapted to abut the portions 7 and 9 respectively.
n The ventilator is adapted to it inthe rectangular opening in the wall 1, and when the same is removed the'members 2, 3 and 4f may be easily separated' for cleansing'purposes.
When the ventilator is in position in the wall 1 and the lids 12 are in the open position, air may circulate freely in a sinuous course as indicated by arrows in Fig. 1, but when said lids are closed air circulation isprevented. The stops 13 are rectangular blocks project-- ing over the wall opening and secured to the wall 1 on the outside thereof. These stops prevent the ventilator from moving in one direction and the button 13 pivoted to the wall 1 prevents movement in the other.
To prevent snow or rain from entering the ventilator the openings on the outslde thereof are formed adjacent the center and lower edge, itbeing obvious that if the outside openings were arranged adjacent the center and-top edge as on the inside of the ventilator rain would readily collect and render the `ventilator ineffectual.
The lids 12 are substantially rectangular in form and are hinged to the brackets 14 secured to the wall 1, the handles 15 being oentrally disposed on the lids in order that the same may be easily opened or closed. And a handle 16 is secured to the inside of the ventilator, by means of which the same may be easily withdrawn.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my improved Ventilator, I do not wish to be limited thereto, as there might be slight modifications thereof which would be comprehended within the scope of my invention.
Having described my invention what I claim as new desire to secure by Letters l staggered de lectors 6 and 6", and side Walls Patent is:
1. A device of the class described, comprising a horizontal partition provided with integral upwardly and downwardly extending staggered delectors and side walls integral with said partition and deiiectors and slightly longer than the deflectors, and upper and lower plates provided with deflectors adapted to extend into the space between said first mentioned defiectors, substantially as described.
2. The combination witha wall 1 having a rectangular opening, with a rectangular ventilator comprising the horizontal partition 5,
11 all cast integral wit-h each other; plates v7 and 9 provided with delectors 8 and 10; hinged lids l12 for closing the openings through said ventilators; and means for removably locking said ventilator in said open- En testimony whereof yI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
