To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED W. MILLER, a citizen of the 'l lnitcd States, residing at Monroe, in the county of Green and State of VVisconsin, have invented a new and useful -l"uncliing and Shearing Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined metal punching and shearing machine in which a series of diflerent sized punches are provided which are arranged in a circular series on a rotatable disk, and mounted to rotate with said disk isa second disk which is provided with a circular series of dies cooperating with the iunches.
The object of the present invention is to provide'improved means for mounting and operating the punches, as well as certain novel structural details which will be referred to more fully hereinafter, and also to provide an improved shearing device, and means for operating the same.
With the foregoing objects in view, the invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the drawing hereto annexed in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view ofthe punch carrier. Fig.
4 is a side view of the same and the die carrier.
The supporting frame of the machine comprises a pair of check plates 5 which are spaced apart asuitable distance as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. In thefront edges of the cheek plates are recesses 6 which form a space in which the punching mechanism works.
The punching mechanism com rises a disk 7 carrying the punches, and a dis 8 provided with cooperatmg dies. A plurality of different-sized punches are provided which are arranged in a circular series on the disk 7. Each punch 9 is supported by a carrier 10 which is in the shape of a lunger slidably mounted inopenings in the isk 7, the latter being provided with a circular series of such openings. The plunger projects from opposite faces of the disk, and in one of the 'projecting ends is a socket 11 to receive the punch. The other end of the plunger is formed with ahead 12, between which head and the adjacent face of the disk, a spring 13 is coiled around the projecting end of the plunger. Between the cheek plates 5 is slidably mounted a block 18 having at its upper and lower ends forwardly extendin rtlons 19 and 20, res ectively, the block iiiain thus shaped simi or to the letter C, This bIock is so located that the under side of its portion 19 extends into the recess 6 above the punchcarriers, and there being an undercut groove 19" in said side extending from one end to the punch carriers. The rear ed e of the block 18 engages anti-friction rollers 21 mounted between the cheek plates. The front edges of the cheek plates 5, are also recessed as indicated at 22, and to one of said plates is bolted or otherwise secured a stationary shear blade 23, said blade'projecting into the recess. The movable shear blade is indicated at 24. The last-mentioned blade is bolted or otherwise secured to the under side of the portion 20 of the block 18, said portion extending into the recess 22.
Between the cheek lates 5, at the upper end of the supporting ame is pivoted, as indicated at 25, a lever 26,. Near the'base of the machine is fulcrumed at 27, a hand-lever 28 which is connected by a link 29 to the lever 26. Between the lever 26, and the upper edge of the block 18, is loosely located a block 30 which transmits the motion of the said lever 26 to the block 18. The block 30 works between the cheek plates 5, and is engaged by the lever 26 close to the fulcrum 25, whereby a powerful leverage is obtained. The block 18 is also connected by rods 31 to the lever 26.
In operation, the disk 7 is turned until the unch which is to be used is connected to the block 18 the head of the punch carrier being placed within the groove 19. The work to e punched is then placed on the disk 8, and the hand lever 28 is swung downwardl whereupon through the connections ahead; described, the punch is forced through the work, the die opening in the disk 8 cooperating with the punch in the usual manner.
The thrust of the lever 26 is transmitted to the block 18 through the block 30, there being no thrust on the rods 31, said rods only serving to lift the block 18 when hand lever 28 is swung in the opposite direction. Inasmuch asthc shear blade 24 is also carried by the block 18, it will be seen that the shear is operated by the same mechanism which operates the punches.
By the construction herein described a .machine is had which is strong: d powerful,
and suitable for heavy wor It can be easily operated, and the arrangement of levers is such that suificient power is obtained to enable the machine to be manually operated.
What is claimed is:
1. In a punching machine, a su porting frame, comprising spaced cheek p ates recessed in one of their edges, a block mounted between the plates adjacent to the recess, a shaft rotatably mounted in said block, a pair of spaced disks mounted on said shaft and located in the aforesaid recess, a series of punches carried by one of the disks, and cooperating dies on the other disk, and means for operating the punches.
2. In a shearing machine, a supportingg frame comprising spaced check plates ref cessed in one of their edges, a stationary o shear blade connected to one of the cheek plates, and projecting into the recess, a movable shear blade, a support for the last mentioned blade mounted between the cheek plates, and operating means connected to 5 said support, 7
