UNTTED $TATES PATENT O FFTCE.
SAMUEL BORGHARDT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
OOMBENED SHOE AND SANDAL.
Application filed. December 30, 1907.
Be it known that l, SAMUEL Borzonnnnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in a Combined Shoe and Sandal, fully described and repre sented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in combined shoes and sandals.
It is the object of the present invention to produce a combined shoe and sandal which will protect the feet of the wearer and keep them out of contact with the ground, and which at the same time will be effectually ventilated by the act of walking.
t is a further object of the invention to produce such a combined sandal and shoe capable of being manufactured cheaply and quickly, and which shall be durable in wear.
Generally, these objects are accomplished by so arranging the quarter and the vamp as to provide an aperture or opening on the side of the shoe, between and surrounded by said quarter and vamp, this arrangement protecting the feet of the wearer and keeping them from contact with the ground, and at the same time effecting thorough ventilation of the feet.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference will now be had to the drawing, in connection with which the invention will now be described in detail.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a side view of the improved combined shoe and sandal; Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a similar section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now tosaid drawing, 1 indicates the sole of the combined shoe and sandal to which the various parts of said shoe are secured, which sole may be of any suitable or desired configuration. The construction and arrangement of the vamp and the quarter making up the upper, which forms the important feature of the invention, may be somewhat varied. The vamp and the quarter, however, will be so constructed as to leave an aperture or opening in the side of the shoe for the purpose of ventilating the same, and one construction for accomplishing this object will now be described.
The vamp marked 2, is shown as comprising sides 3 and tongue 4. The sides 3 extend Specification of Letters Patent.

backward towards the rear of the shoe and slope gradually toward the sole, as shown in Fig. 1. The vamp is secured to the solo by the usual stitching 5, and is attached thereto independently of the quarter. The quarter 6 is provided with the heel portion 7, and sides 8. These sides 8, at their front or forward ends are cut away to form wing-shaped portions 9, these wings being arranged to extend over on to the upper portion of the sides 4 of the vamp 2. These wings are cut away, as shown at 10, on each side of the shoe sufficiently to form an aperture 11 on each side, this aperture being located between the sides 8 of the vamp and the sides of the quarter. The sides 8 of the quarter, as shown in Fig. 1, extend slightly beyond and overlap the sides 3 of the vamp 2, as shown at 12, the vamp and the quarter thus surrounding the apertures 11, and keeping the foot out of contact with the ground. These sides 8 of the quarter, where they overlap on the vamp, are not secured to the vamp in any manner, but are secured by stitching 13 to the sole. The wings 9 of the quarter are held in position and secured to the upper portion of the vamp at their forward lower ends by rivets 14, the upper ends 15 of the wings 9 being left free, so that they may be bent over on the tongue 4 and held in position by buckles or lacing, eye-holes 16 being provided for that purpose. If desired, the wings may be secured to the vamp by stitching instead of by the rivets 14. A heel piece 17, as shown in Fig. 1, may be provided, which is secured to the quarter by the usual stitching 18. An insole 18 is provided, which may be put in and secured in any usual or desired manner.
It is apparent that with the above construction, namely, by leaving the quarter and the vamp unattached at the point 15 where they overlap, and providing the apertures 11, the movement of walking will suck air into the apertures and the whole shoe will be effectually ventilated. lf further ventilation be desired, the vamp 2 may be provided with a series of perforations 19.
The elimination of the stitching between the vamp and the quarter at the sides permits, also, of much greater speed and economy in manufacture.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is:-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a combined shoe and sandal comprising a vamp and a quarter overlapping said vamp at its upper end, said quarter also having sides overlapping the lower portion of the vamp but free therefrom, the adjacent edges of said parts being so shaped as to provide an opening be tween them 111 the side of the shoe.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a oombined shoe and sandal comprising a vamp and a quarter overlapping said vamp at its upper end, said quarter also having sides overlapping the lower portion of the vamp but free therefrom, the adjacent edges of said parts being so shaped as to provide an opening be tween them on each side of the shoe.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a combined shoe and sandal comprising a vamp and a quarter having wings extending over onto the upper portion of the vamp and secured thereto at their front ends, and also having sides overlapping the lower portion of the vamp but free therefrom, the adj aoent edges .of said vamp and quarter being so shaped relatively to each other as to provide an opening between them in the side of the shoe, substantially as described.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a combined shoe and sandal comprising a vamp and a quarter having Wings extending over on to the upper portion of the vamp and secured thereto at their front ends, said quarter also having sides overlapping the lower portion of the vamp but free therefrom, said sides being cut away to leave an aperture oneach side of the shoe between and surrounded by said vamp and quarter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
