Description
UNITED STATES GEEICE.
BENJAMIN NV. HEALEY, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN CENTER-BEARINGS FOR LQCOMOTIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 91,015, dated June 8, 1869.
To all whom it may concer-n:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN W. HEALEY, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Center-Bearings for Locomotives, Ste.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specication.
This invention relates to improvements in supporting locomotives, tenders, cars, &c., on their trucks, and has for its object to provide a ball-and-soelret connection for the same, as will be hereinafter described.
The drawing represents a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved arrangement.
The truc-k is represented in red, and A represents a centerbearing plate suitably secured thereon, having a concavity, B, in its upper face, wherein is arranged a convex bearing, C, suited to the concavity ofthe bearing-suriace of the plate A. Gonical holes are made through the vertical axis of both parts, and a bolt, D, placed therein, to hold them together vertically, but allowing them to oscillate or move freely on their bearing-surfaces in all directions.
In order to provide ample bearing-surface through the part A for the pin, an extension, E, may be provided around the same, and the part C may be recessed to provide room for the same, and admit of the oscillations.
The saddle supporting the locomotive or car is secured to the top of the upper bearing G in any suitable manner.
I have found in practice that this arrangement supports a locomotive or other carriage quite as steadily as outside bearings, while it admits the proper oscillation for the curves or inequalities of the road with much less frictional resistance.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- -The ball-andsocket center-bearing for locomotives, consisting of the concave part A, convex part C, and the center-pin D, the center apertures of the parts A B being of conical form, as herein described, for the purpose specied.
BENJ. W. HEALEY.
