Description

HACKENBACH.
Braam-Loading Fire-Arm.
Patnted June 22, 1869.
intd hm-a @met dimite.
JOHN ADAM HECKENBACH, OF MAYVILLE, WISCONSIN.'
Letters Patent No. 91,624, dated June 22, 1,869.
MPROVBMENT IN BREECH-LOADIN G- FIRE-ARMS.
The'Bchedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the Blame.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, J OHN ADAM HECKENBACH, of Mayville, in the county of Dodge, and State of Wisconsin,.have invented a new and useful Improvement in Breech-Loading Fire-Arms; and 'I do hereby declare that the following is a full, lear, and eXact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make-and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of my improved fire-arm, taken through one barrel.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal section ofthe same, taken between the barrels.
' Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section ot' the same, taken in the line x x, tig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding part-s.
This invention relates to certain improvements in breech-loading tire-arms, and is more particularly intended for double-barrelled hunting-guns.
The invention consists in the construction and coinbination of parts for locking and adjusting the swinging and sliding barrels of the gun. l
A, in the drawing, represents the stock or handle of my improved lire-arm.
B is the breech-block attached to the same. It carries a forward extension, C, on which the barrel is supported, and a tail-piece, D, by which it is fastened to the stock. The barrel E, which is double, is provided with downward-projecting lugs a, that are, by a pin, b, pivoted to the front part of. the extension O, the pin b fit-ting through a slot, c, of C, to allow sliding and swinging motion of the barrel.
A projecting knob, or cross-head t', is formed on the i forward end of G, to sustain the weight of the bai-rel, l and take the strain from the pin b while the barrel is swung down, as in iig. l.
From the breech-block project cylindrical breech` pieces d d, which are so shaped that they t into the breech-ends of the barrels, to hold the saine down.
The barrels have each a chamber at the breech-end, into which a shell, or case F is fitted. 'This case is made of steel, and is large enough to receive the whole charge of powder and balls or shot, or a cartridge.
Into or-t-hrough the closed real-end ofthe case F is fitted the nipple G for the percussion-cap. This nipple projects from the inside and outside of the head e, as is lclearly shown in iig. 1. Its outer end is to receive the percussion-cap, while its inner end is to pierce when one or tw`o are stopped up, the third willgcauseA the explosion to take place. The piece will therefore not be apt to miss re.
The case F can be readily withdrawn from the barrel when the same is swung down -and moved forward,
as in tig. 1. It can, when thus withdrawn, be easily filled with the requisite charge or cartridge, or replaced by another already tlled, and forms not only a reliable l measure for the charge, but also serves to keep the barrel clean, and in constant working-older. I
Vhen the barrel is to be locked for firing, it is first swung horizontal, to rest ou thearm C, and is then moved back until it strikes the breech-block, when it will be held down by the extensions cl l ot' the same, while it will be locked by a catch, H, that tits in front of a plate, g, formed on the under side of the barrel, as in iig. 2.
The catch H is arranged in the arm O, and is thrown np by a spring, h. It can, when the barrel is to be pushed forward and swung down, he drawn down by a trigger, I, pivoted to C, to allow forward motion to the barrel.
J J are sliding bars fitted through the breech-piece, so that their ends are held tight against the caps ou the nipples when the barrels are in iiriug-position.
When the hammers K are swung down, they strike these slides J', and force them against the caps, so as to explode the cap, and with it the charge.
The hannuers are operated hy a set ot' triggers, L, and are connected with a suitable lock.
The greatest advantage of this lire-arm is that it cannot be accidentally discharged while the loading-process is going on, as the hammer is out oi' connection with the charge until the piece is ready for ring.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The spring-catch H, constructed as described, and operated by the trigger I, in combination with the hreech-proiection d, for locking the swinging and sliding barrel E, as herein shown and described.
