FREDERICK W. BARNES, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO EASTMAN KODAK COMPANY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK BOX AND SHIPPING PACKAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 10, 1908.
Application filed April 1, 1905. Serial No. 253,320.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. BARNES, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box and Shipping Packages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
My present invention relates to boxes or receptacles, preferably constructed of paper or similar material, and adapted to contain small articles, preferably such as are adapted to be used in connection with a liquid, and it has for its objects to provide a box which may be packed with a bottle, the whole forming a shipping package of regular form, all as Will be hereinafter described.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully explained, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional view of a box or receptacle constructed in accordance with my invention showing the manner of using it in connection with a bottle to form a cylindrical shi ping package. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectionalview taken on the line wx of Fig. 1.
Similar reference numerals in the several figures indicate similar parts.
Heretofore in putting up for shipping, small articles as tablets or capsules to be used in connection with a liquid accompanying them in a bottle or other similar li uid container, it has been customary to p ace said capsules or tablets in an ordinary round or rectangular pasteboard box and the liquid in an ordinary bottle containing a narrow neck, and in packing the two for shipment, con siderable space is required for the package, containing the solid material, and therefore considerable extra space had been required, and the package containing the two has not been symmetrical. With the object, therefore, of providing a box or container which is adapted to pack with an ordinary bottle or one of special shape, but having the usual narrow neck, I have devised a box having a cover or closure and which is adapted to fit around the neck of the bottle, thereby utilizing for the reception of the solid articles, the space in the shipping package which would otherwise not be utilized.
In the present embodiment of my invention the box is annular in form, being composed of the outer cylindrical portion 1 and the inner cylindrical portion 2, both formed of concentric paper tubes connected at their lower ends by a bottom 3, while their u per ends are open and adapted to be closed y a removable cover 4, as shown in Fig. 1. The height of the box is slightly greater than that of the distance from the shoulder of the bottle 5 with which the box is employed, to the upper end of the stopper 6 thereof, so that the cover will not engage said stopper, and the lower end of the inner portion of the box will rest upon the shoulder of the bottle.
When the box is employed in connection with a bottle and an outer container or wrapper, a convenient mailing package is formed, the outer wrapper of corrugated paper, indicated by 7, having the narrower interior diameter thereof around the bottle, this narrower portion being formed by an additional (and removable) lining of corrugated paper indicated by 8.
It will be understood that while I prefer to make the box cylindrical in form, as this is best adapted for round bottles, it could well be of any desired shape, rectangular or other wise, but preferably of a form to correspond with that of the bottle with which it is to be used.
Boxes thus described may be used for containing capsules, tablets or powders which are to be used in connection with the liquid contained in the bottle, or for general shipping urposes if desired.
I c aim as my invention:
In a shipping package, the combination with a wrapper and a container therein having a relatively narrow neck forming a shoulder portion, of a removable receptacle formed of concentric tubes having a bottom FREDERICK W. BARNES.

piece arranged between them at their lower ends and adapted to extend around the neck of the container and to rest against the sh0ul- ,A der thereof, said receptacle being detached 5 with relation to both Wrapper and container, and a flanged cover for closing the up er end of the receptacle, the flanges thereo fitting
