HEINRICH BURRIS, OF HEMER, GERMANY.
TYPOG-RAPHERS COMPOSING AND FOUNDING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led November 8, 1907.
Patented Oct. 27, 1908.
Serial No. 401,301.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itaknown that I, HEINRICH Burials, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Hemer, in Westphalia, Germany, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Typographers Composing and Founding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in typographers composing and founding machines, and more particularly to an improved device for charging-'up the Crucible of the machineV containing the founding mass. I-Iitherto, the crucibles are chargedup by throwing so-called kilo-blocks or worked-off old type-rows in large quantities into the liquid founding mass in the crucibles which thereby is naturally cooled temporarily, so that it requires always a certain time until the founding mass has again attained its proper temperature.
Now, the improved device has for its object to avoid these drawbacks while at the same time providing an automatic chargingup of the crucibles.
The improved device is shown on the accompanying drawing in Figures l to 3 in a front view, sectional side view, and plan respectively.
The device comprises a type-galley a the width. of which can be adjusted by any suitable means, the galley being designed to be filled with the old type-rows b to be melted down in the Crucible. These type-rows Z) are by a cross-beam c moved to one end of the device in that the cross-beam is operated by the tension of a spiral spring f through the medium of two cords CZ attached to both ends of the cross-beam and guided over rollers e. On the enlarged face wall r/ of the type-galley, a movable lever z is disposed which is adjustable to alter its stroke limit, while on one side of this lever a slide 7c is pivoted and adapted to be moved up and down in guides z'. On the opposite side, the lever L carries at its other arm a downwardly directed drawing-rod Z which serves to connect the device with the mechanism of the machine by the rod being attached. to
the reciprocating plunger system of the crucible.
The device is operated in such a manner that upon the plunger lever of the machine being lowered the slide c is raised, while upon the plunger lever going again up the slide 7u is again lowered. Gn the slide 7c being raised always one type-row which is forced. towards the face wall g by the spring `influenced cross-beam. c, is'pushed through a slot m in the face wall g the area of which slot can be altered by means of an adjustable plate a, the type-row being supplied to the Crucible, above which the device is arranged, either directly through a slot in the same or through the medium of a charging hopper o forming the end of the face wall g so that the quantity of founding mass which has shortly before this been discharged from the Crucible for founding a new type-row, is permanently replaced in an automatic way.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a typographers composing and founding machine, an automatic device for charging up the Crucible during the founding process; comprising in combination with the Crucible receiving the founding mass and with the old type-rows to be melted down in said Crucible; an adjustable type-galley disposed with one end directly above said crucible and designed to receive said old typerows, .means to force said old type-rows to one side of said galley facing said crucible, an enlarged face wall on one side of said galley facing the Crucible, a slide disposed in said face wall to close and open automatically so as to allow in the latter case of one of said type-rows being supplied to said crucible, and means to operate said slide, all for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto setiny hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
