M-y improved folding umbrella comprises l telwoopic stafl' or rod composed, preferab of upper und lower tubular sections 1 The lower section is adapted to slide into the upper section und when extended is locked by a sp catch 3, showa mute c1ear!y in Figs. 5 an 13. Said catch is in the 10m1 of a spring plnte arranged within fl1e section 2 und lms formed, adjacenl: to one und, a projection or nib 4 und an oflset portion The latter engages the interior of the section 2 und tbe prqection 4 enters an aperhne in said sect1on 2 so that the catx:h is retained in said section. The free endof the catch is formed with a nib 6 und a finger piece "i, which rtions are adnpted l:o spring through a ot 8 formal in the seclzon 2. The nib 6 is adapted to enter an an;nnlar groove 9 formed in the lower end of the sectitm 1, prefernbly, by crimping said und, as showu. When Lhe nib 6 enters the gxxwe 9 the two sections will be locked in eir extended position und when the finger iece 7 is pressed into the seetion 2 the ni 6 ves the groove 9, therebv unlocking said sections und permitting e lower one to telesoopa into the upper one. The lower section 2 cun rotate m the up section 1 am! the provision of the annu ar groove or seal: 9 in the latter insures the locking of the two sections when the lower secti0n is pulled out of the upper one.

The lower staif section 2 is adapted to carry a handle which may be of smy suitable form und coustruction und either rmnnently or detachably mounted. As mom clearly shown in Fi 5 und 12, the handle 12 cansists of a sohd or tubular shank 13 adapted to enter the lower end of the sect1on 2 and having upon one of its end s an ornamental 5 head 14 which may be straxght, angular, or of other form, und which may be formed integral with the stem or shank 13 qr secured thereto by a rivet 15 or other smtable fastening means. In the inner end of the stem or shank 13 is formed a lon 1tudz nal slot. 15 to receive a sg:in catch havmg a large end which is ecf m the slot 15 by rivets 18. 'Ihe ribs are compased of inner und unter l.ingedl v connected actions 21, 22 and they am an ported and operated by bruces which Hxave their lower ends pivotecl to a sliding sleeve or mnuer 24 an the upper 1-.tafl' section 1 am! their upper ends pivoted to the inner rib sections at points intermediae the end-s of the latter. The inner rib secticns 21 are pivoted in a nolelied head er eruwn 25 in the usual manner, that is, by passing a wire 26 through apertures in saicl =|5 stc;ions 21 und throngh an annular ocne formed in tl1e unter edge of the hea 25 so as to intersect radial notches that receive the upertured encls 0f said seetions 21. The head 25 is secured in osition a suitable dis- 50 tance fizxm the upper end 01 the section 1, bg providing tl:e semi-eircular fastener 2T, s mm more clea rly in F 8. This fastener has its ends bent mward y to provide short plus 28 which enter alining apertures in the section 1 und the extended npper end of the head 25. The inner und outer seetions 21, 22 uf !he ribs are constructed of the usual wires of U- slmpe in cmss section and they are hingedly connected, as more clearly shown in Figs. 14, 15, und 16 of the'drawings. This hinge cannection or 'oint consists of a reinforcing und hin mem r 32 secured upon the inner end of t e outer sction 22 und a reinforcing and hinge member 33 secured upon the longitudfnally curved unter end 34 of the inner section 21. The member 32 is in the i:'nrm of a metal plate having an inner portion bent around und secured 10 the section 22. a short 35 distance from the end of the lntter, und .=paced pivot ears 38 which project frnm the inner portion of the member 32. The inner rib sections 21 bare the braces 23 connected to them at points inter- 130 mediale their ends, und in order to strengthen them, I prefembly secure in their clmnneled under faces reinforcing rods 44, as shown in Fi g. 21. Said rib section may, however, be remforced or stmngthened in any nther s1 11table manner. The joint or hi connec tion between the rib section 21 an its brace 23, ns pleurly own, is similar to the joint shown m Fig. 16. Said hinge cannection comprisesa hinge plate bent nround anal secnred to the section 21 und formed with spaced apertured ears 46; und it also comprises a plante 01 hin member 47 bent around und secured to braee 23 und having spaoed e:us 48 to receive the ears 46, the extremity of the brace 23 being shaped to form a centrally disposecl ear 49.
