After leaving the pasting rolls the strip passes over a su 'oporting plate'or guideway 38 from which the end of the strip is drawn past the severing means and the severed por tions' then advanced to the covering means. As the strip is drawn over the support 38 intermittently and is fed from the pasting rolls continuously, the support 38 is preferably placed, some distance beyond the pasting rolls so as to allow the, portion of the strip between the support and the pasting roll'to fall in a loop during the intermissions between its movementover the support. Strip feeding, aasting' and severing means comprising means for continuously feeding and. pasting the strip; a support beyond the pasting means, and means for advancing the end of the strip intermittently over the support and past severing means is described andclaimed in my application No. 182,569, filed November 25, 1903.
Any suitable severing means may be provided. The preferred means shown c0111- prises a stationary lower blade 40 and a movable upper blade 4:1 which is preferably pivoted on one of a pair of guide rods 42,

The shaft 68 also carries a rod TO extending toward the gripper carriage 51 in position to be engaged by a lug 71 carried by the gripper carriage before the carriage-reaches the end of its return movement, whereby thepressing roll 6(3-is raised as the rod 70 is de-. pressed by the lug 71 and is held in its raised position during the remainder of the return movement of the gripper carriage and during the first part of its feeding movement. T hen when the gripper carriage has made a portion of its feeding movement the roll 66 again allowed to press the strip lightly against the pin so that when the strip has been moved a distance to bring another of the perforations :0 to the pin 65 the pm will be caused to project through such opening and the movement of the strip stopped, the
grippers thereafter slipping on the strip during any furthermovement they may have before coming to rest for the operation of the severing blades. As the grippers again come into gripping position, the pushing roll (36 is again raised from the strip of material to permit it to be drawn forward another sheet length by the grippers. It will be seen that by providing such interrupting means in combination with the non- .iositive feeding means. and by giving the grippers a slightly greater movement before. the rest for the ope ation of the severing means than is necessary to feed a sheet length of the covering strip. the successive covering sheets will always be cut accurately between the labels on the strip.
For holding the strip ofcovering material hit on the support 38 a number of pressing fingers 72 are preferably provided. as shown in Fig 2and 5.
- The boxes to be covered are supplied to the. machine with. the body portions and cover portions of the boxes associated to gether and ready to have the covering sheets applied to the bottom and top and about 'one side thereof. The boxes are .placed' in .a holder 75 through whiclrthey are advanced -l slightly backward and out. of contact with fiat-wise on edge by means of belts 76 mounted on vertical rolls 77 and 78 having their inner or feed runs extending inside the opposite side walls of the holder. For press-- ing the inner runs of the feed belts 76 in ward and adjusting the pressure on the boxes, pressing rolls 79 are provided as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, such rolls being preferably carried by arms pivoted on the shafts of the rolls T7 and 78 and adjustable by means of adjusting screws 80. The belt rolls 7? are geared together. as shown in' Fig. 2, and the shaft of one of said rolls is extended downward; and driven by bevel gears" 81 from a shortshaft 82,. w'liicl1 is driven by a sprocket chain 83 from the main driving slia t 85. The row of boxes in .the holder isconstantly pressed forward by ,the belts 7G to carry the end box of the row against the front plate 86 of the holder, and from this position the successive end boxes are fed edgewise downward by meansof a plunger 8?. vThe holder is preferably pro-. vided with'ayielding bottom at the delivery end of the holder; such portion of the bottom of the holder}being formed by means ofa pivoted p'late'SS normally held in support-' ing position by means of springs as shown in Fig. .1, and adapted to turn downward to the position suown in dotted lines in Fig; 9 as the end box is forced downward from the holder. The plunger 87 is reciprocated by means of a lever 90 carried by a rock shaft 91 which shaft also carries an arm 92 connected by a link 93 with a lever .94 whichcarries a cam roll running in a face of the cam disk 56 cam groove in one on the shaft When the box bodies and covers-are provided with covering material'about the sides thereof the edges of wvhich. are turned ov er againstthe top'and bottom. said turned over edges are liable to become displaced or injured by the movement of the end box against the next box in the holder as it i pushed downward by the plunger 97. To avoid this ditliculty there is preferably provided means whereby. asthe plunger makes its downward movement to push the end box out of the holder, the next box will be moved slightly backward in the holder away from the end box so that the surfaces of the two boxes will not'be in contact as the end but movedfromthe holder. For-thi purpose the plunger 87 istp'referably provided with a rearward extension 95 having a beveled or. wedge shaped lowerend for engaging the next to the last box in the holder to push the same back slightly in the holder as the the last box in the holder will thus be forced lOU force the'box and covering blankdownward between a pairof folding and pressing roll- -ers 100 whereby the blank is folded upward and pressed against the top and bottom of covering blanks are fed and supportedby the .end box in the holder as the latter is moved edgewise from the holder, and all ,-:danger of injury to the boxes by reason-f one sliding against the other is thereby avo ded.
"The covering sheets are carried by the 'grippers 50 into position beneath the end of the box holder so that the central portion of the"blank will lie directly beneath the end box in the holder. The plunger 87 makes its downward feeding movement after the envl ering-blank has been carried into position I and thereby forces the end box in the holder downwardto carry thelower edge or side of the boxaga nst the covering blank and to the box. A second pair of rollers 101 is pref- 'erably provided beneath the rollers 100 for further, pressing. the covering 'm'aterial against the'top and bottom of the box as the box moved downward between said rollers.

' mentas would be required to move the box I between and clear of the pressing rolls, other feedingmeans arepreferably provided for engaging the box after it hasbeen forced bel'tween the folding rolls andfor moving it the remainder of the distance to carry it clear of said rolls. The plunger is preferably given a reciprocation sufficient to carry the upper edge of the box below the plane in which the the feeding grippers 50. For completing the movement of the box between thefolding and pressing rollers 1-00 and 101, a pair of feeding arms '102 is preferably provided having inwardly extending ends or shoulders '10? adapted to project over and engage the upper edge of the boxw'vhich has been. pushed downward between the'rolls by the plunger, such feeding armsbemg preferably pivotally I mounted in a reciprocating support 1.01 which support is preferably mounted to sllde vertically in ways 105 and reciprocated by means of a lever 106 which carries a cam roll running in a cam groove in one face of acam disk 109 on the shaft 35. By. its passage between the folding and pressing rolls 100 and 101, the covering sheet will be pressed smoothly against the top and bottom of the box, and the portion of the sheet extending about the lower side of the box; will be pressed firmly against such side by means of the presser -bar 110. It will be noticed that the pressureof the presser bar against the lower side of the box is increased by the resistance of .the spring pressed bars 108, and such resistance may be adjusted to give the desired pressure on the portion of the covering sheetsecured to such side ofthe box. The application of the covering sheet to the box being thus completed, the box is-delivered preferably by means of a horizontally re 1 ciprocating plunger 115 carried by a rod 116 in position to engage the covered box as it is supported by the feeding arms and presser bar and force it fiatwisetherefrom and into a delivery chute 117 from which the box may be taken by handor received by suitable receiving devices.
