Description

PATENTED JULY 14, 1908.
0. M. OLBAVLAND. ATTACHMENT FOR GAS s'rovss.
APPLIOATION FILED JAN. 24, 1908.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. CLEAVLAND, OF WAUSAU, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK A.
' HECKER, OF WAUSAU, WISCONSIN.
ATTACHMENT FOR GAS-STOVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1908.
Application filed January 24, 1908. Serial No. 412,452.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. CLEAV- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVausau, in the county of Marathon and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Gas-Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for gas or other hydrocarbon stoves utilizing burners and its object is to provide means whereby the fuel may be economized by concentrating the heat produced by the combustion of the fuel.
Another object is to provide an attachment of this character which can be readily placed in position upon a stove and which permits practically all of the generated heat to be utilized for cooking or'other purposes.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a section through the attachment, the same being shown in position upon a stove a portion of which is shown. Fi 2 is a plan view of the attachment, a part of the cover being broken away to show the interior construction of the receptacle portion of the attachment.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates a portion of a stove burner 2 of any suitable form disposed therebelow, this burner being preferably of the ordinary round form. The stove top has the usual opening 3 over which the utensils to be heated are ordinarily placed and this opening is designed to receive the main or deflecting member of the attachment. This member consists of an inverted frusto-conical body 4 having a cylindrical extension 5 at its lower or small end designed to surround the burner 2, the same being spaced therefrom for a suflicient distance to permit enough air to pass the burner to support combustionf An annular flange 6 is disposed at the upper or large 'end of the body 4 and is designed to rest upon the stove body having a body. This flange is provided with an upstanding peripheral ring 7 constltuting a retainer.
A cylindrical supporting body 8 is designed to rest upon the flange 6 and to be being necessary to surrounded by ring 7, this body being open at its upper end and having a handle 9 whereby it can be conveniently manipulated. A lining 10 of asbestos or other suitable insulating material is preferably located within the body 8.
A receptacle is used in connection with the attachment and consists of a body 11 tapered toward its lower or closed end and having its wall fluted or corrugated as shown at 12, said wall being provided at its upper end with an annular flange 13 extending across the channels formed by the corrugations and being so proportioned as to rest upon the upper edge of body 8 so as to support the body 11. An annular retaining rib 14 is formed at the periphery of flange 13 and constitutes means for holding a lid 15 upon the receptacle. This lid may be of any preferred transverse contour and is designed to rest flat upon flange 13. Openings 16 are formed in the flange 13 beyond the outside channels formed between corrugations 12 and these openings are designed to register with corresponding openings 17 formed in the lid 15.
It will be apparent scribed attachment can be conveniently used with hydrocarbon stoves of various forms it have the burner located below an opening formed in the stove top. In order to place the attachment in position the body 4 is suspended within the opening 3 so that the cylindrical extension 5 will surround the burner 2. The body 8 is then positioned upon flange 6 after which the receptacle 11 is supported within the body 8 by placing its flange 13 thereon. The food to be cooked or the article to be heated is then placed within receptacle 11 and the fuel is ignited at burner 2. Combustion will be supported by air entering the extension 5 and all of the products of combustion will pass upward through bodies 4 and 8 and can only escape through the openings 16 and 17. The lining 10 prevents radiation of heat and the body 4 likewise prevents the waste of heat which usually occurs between the burner and the stove top. It will be apparent that the esca e of the combustion products can be readi y controlled by means of the cover 15. This cover can be so positioned as to entirely or partly close the openings 16. It will be apparent of course that an attachment such as herein described serves to that the herein degreatly economize the heat and. permits the reduction of the quantity of fuel consumed Without reducing the efliciency of the stove. It Will be obvious that the attachment can 5 be made in various shapes and sizes to fit stoves of different sizes.
If preferred, a bail such as shown at 18 may be connected to the body 8. The body 4 can be provided With an inner lining of in sulating material such as indicated at 19 although this lining may be dispensed With, if desired. Although the device has been shown with a kettle used in connection therewith it is to be understood that other forms of utensils may be combined With the members 4, 8 and 15 Without materially departing from the invention. I
Vhat is claimed is:
1. An attachment for hydrocarbon stoves comprising an inverted frusto-conical burner receiving body having an annular support engaging flange, a supporting body mounted upon and held against lateral displacement by the flange, a utensil extending into the supporting body and having an apertured annular flange bearing upon the supporting body, and an apertured cover revolubly mounted upon the utensil for controlling the passage of gases through the apertures in the 2. An attachment for hydrocarbon stoves comprising an inverted irusto-conical burner receiving body having an annular support flange, a supporting body upon and centere by said. flange, a utensil supported Within said last mentioned body and having longitudinal corrugations, there being an apsupporting body, a cover revolubl y engaging flange, a supporting body upon and centered by the flange, linings Within the frusto-conical and supporting bodies, and a 4 utensil suspended Within the supporting body and spaced therefrom, said utensil having an annular apertured flange bearing upon the supporting body.
4. An attachment for hydrocarbon stoves 5 comprising an inverted frusto-conical burner receiving body having an annular support engaging flange, a supporting body upon and centered by the flange, linings Within the frusto-conical and supporting bodies, a uten 5 sil suspended Within the supporting body and spaced therefrom, said utensil having an annular apertured flange bearin upon the mounted upon the utensil and having an apertured 6 peripheral portion cooperating With the apertured flange to regulate the escape of gases from the holding body, the utensils being provided with longitudinal corrugations, each aperture in the flange being dis 6 posed at the upper end of one of the exterior panels formed by the corrugations.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my oWn, I have hereto afliXed my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
CHARLES M. CLEAVLAND.
