UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY G. VOIGIIT, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO RUSSELL & ERWIN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
LOCK CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1908.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY G. VoIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, Hartford county, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock Construction, of 'ahich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements inv locks, and has for its object means forconnecting the various parts of the lock to a door in a simple and efficient manner. In this instance the connection of the lock to one side, and the escutcheon plate to the opposite side of the door is effected from the inner side of the door, the lock case proper being removable, whereby, when removed, said connection or disconnection of the parts may be effected. When present the lock case covers or hides the connecting devices.
' In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the plane of line :c9c of Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is a view of the inner side of the upper end of the escutcheon plate Fig. 4 is a plan view thereof Fig. 5 is a view of the inner side of the upper end of the seat plate; Fig. 6 is a plan view thereof.
1 represents a door stile.
2 is the lock case containing any suitable lock mechanism (not shown) and arranged to be secured to the inside of the stile 1.
3 is an escutcheon plate arranged to be secured to the outer side of the stile 1. In the preferred form, two passages are made through the door stile, although a single passage will sull'ice. 4 is a seat plate upon which the lock case 2 may be mounted at the proper time.
5 is a boss on the inner side of the seat plate 4, two of which may be provided, as shown in Fig. 1. These bosses are preferably of circular outline and arranged to stand in corresponding passages in the door stile 1. The escutcheon plate 3 is preferably provided at its inner side with bosses 6-6, corresponding with bosses 55. By making the passage conform to the size and outline of the bosses 56, the parts 3-4 will be properly centered on the door stile, preparatory to introducing the clamping devices, which, in the form shown, are screws 77, which pass through the seat plate 4 and screw into the bosses 66 or extensions therefrom, provided to furnish a sufficient length of screw-thread.
By setting the parts thus far described (the case 2 being for the present detached), the
I have not attempted to show the lock mechanism, nor the method of connecting the operating devices, such as knobs, therewith, but obviously this may be readily provided for by making passages through the bosses 66 and 5-5. The seat plate and the escutcheon plate are the two members which. are adapted to be clamped to the opposite sides of the door. After the parts are securely clamped in lace, the lock case is applied to the seat p ate and performs the double function of a carrier for the lock mechanism and a protector to cover and shield. the clamping devices employed to draw the two members into clamping engagement with the door stile. The lock case 2 is provided with a cap-plate 14, which is secured to the lock case in the usual manner to close in its rear side. This cap-plate 14 is suitably recessed to fit over the seat plate 4.
What I claim is:
-1. In a device of the character described, two members arranged to stand on opposite sides of a door and including two plates ar ranged to make a suiface engagement with said door, a clamping device cooperating with both of said plates, each of said plates having a passage, means whereby said passages will be arranged in alinement, a lock case adapted to one of said plates, and means for detachably connecting said lock case with said plate, said means making direct engagement with both of said parts.
2. In a device of the character described, an escutcheon plate adapted to the outside of a door, a seat plate adapted to the inside of the door, means "for securing said plates together to clamp them securely to said door, a lock case adapted to be secured to said sea-t plate, and attaching devices cooperating with said plate and said lock case to detachably secure the same to each other.
3. In a device of the character described, an escutcheon plate adapted to the outside of a door, a seat plate adapted to the inside of the door, means-operable from the inside of the door and cooperating with both of said 1 plates to clamp them against opposite sides of said door, a lock case adapted to said seat plate, lugs on said parts arranged to aline or register, and an interlocking device arranged 15 to pass through said lugs to detachably c011- nect said parts.
