e itimted :We WMM MAW WILLIAM I-I. TRIMBLE. OFVHILLSBOROUGH, OHIO.
Leners Patent No. 89,521,v dated April 27, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT .IN FENCE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pan: of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. TRIMBLE, of Hillsborough, in the county of Highland, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improve- 'ments in Fences; and do hereby declare that the folmy invention appertaius to make and use the same, I
will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which forni a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the fence; and- Figure 2 is a perspective View `of the rails used.
The post-s for my fence consist of a horizontal base, A, with two braces B B, forming a triangular frame.
'Ilhe braces B B are secured to the same side of the base A, one at ,each end, and are joined together at their upper ends.
A vertical board, C, is then secured at its lower end to the centre of the base A, on the same side as the braces B B are secured. The board C is then bent or sprung, so as to be secured to the upper ends of the braces B B, but ou the opposite side. v
The board O is further mortised with a series of holes for the insertion of the ends of the rails D 1). These ends are bevelled for a suitable length, so that the rails can be inserted from both sides of the fencepost. One rail is inserted from each side in the same mortise, the bevelled ends overlapping each other, as shown in fig. l.
Both ends of therails D are bevelled in this manner; but on the rails D', only onev end is ,thus made,
because I have represented these rails as being the last of one side of the fence.
The corner posts of the fence are made in the saine manner as the other, with the exception that the mortised board G is let into the base A, so that vit will be perfectly perpendicular, and not sprung or bent, as` above mentioned.
On the rear side of this board is then placed edgewise, another board, E, which is also mort-ised for the reception of the ends of the rails. The ends of the rails D', which are inserted in th mortisesv in the board E, are square, but cut with a shoulder, a, to prevent` them from passing through said mortises. This completes one side of the corner. On the other side similarly-shaped rails are inserted into the niortises of the board C on the corner post.v
Theboard E may of course be secured to the board C at any angle desired, so as to adapt the fence to any corner of whatever angle.
It will be, seen that very few nails are required in this fence, only those necessary to make the posts, thus lesseniug the expense.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new,I and desire to secure. by Letters Patent, is-
base A, braces B B, mortised board O, and with or without the ruortised board E, substantially as shown and described.
2.*In combination with the above, the rails D D, bevelled at both ends, and the rails D D', bevelled at one end, and the other end cut square, with a shoulder, a.,.all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of February, 1869. WM. H. TRIMBLE. Witnesses:
WM. M. MEER, WILLIAM SIDERS.
1. A fence-post, constructed, as described, of the-
