To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WARREN E. GILMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to shoes, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a shoe with an instep goring cut so that the rubber filaments in the goring extend in the direction of tension of said goring.

Another object is to provide a shoe in which the ankle portion may be laced up to .fit snugly around the ankle, and in which the shoe may be withdrawn from the foot or placed within the same without requiring the shoe to be unlaced from the upper edge of the ankle portion down beyond the instep of the same.

Another object of the invention is to provide a shoe with an elastic instep portion and eyeleted lacing strips above the instep portion to secure the shoe firmly to the ankle of the wearer.

These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the nu meral 1 designates the combined vamp and quarter of the shoe which may comprise a single piece or which .may be provided with a heel seam, and composed of two pieces, one for each side of' the shoe. is designated 2, the sole 3, and the rear ankle portion 4. These parts of the shoe may be formed of leather of any suitable quality or character, said ankle portion being provided with scallops 5, and secured to said ankle portion and to the combined vam and quarter 1 are two pieces of elastic-we bing 6 se cured together by means of a stay piece or strip 7 upon the inside of the shoe by stitches 8. Lacing strips 10 provided with suitable eyelets 11 are secured to the inner edges of the elastic webbing 6 above the instep portion of the shoe.

It is to be noted that the elastic webbing 6 extends from the tip 2 to the upper edge of the ankle opening of the shoe, and thus serves as a yielding portion over the instep and permitting the adjustment of the shoe by means of the lacing strips above the instep and around the ankle;

Referring to Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings it will be noticed that the rubber filaments or strands of rubber in the goring designated by a, run in substantially horizontal lines from the upper edge thereof to the point I) in Fig. 4, so that when the two pieces 6 are se cured together, the india rubber strands a from the point I) to the lower edge a diverge at angles, one to the other. As a result of this construction or manner of cutting the goring, the lines of strain are in direct alinement'with the rubber strands in the goring.

From the foregoing it will be obvious that a shoe made in accordance with my invention will yield sufficiently to permit the foot to enter the shoe without unlacing the same from the ankle portion below the instep, and that the ankle portion of the shoe may be quickly adjusted and taken up to com pensate for different sizes of ankles.

The shoe may be produced at slight cost, and will always present a neat appearance owing to the fact that it may be fitted snugly around the ankle and taken up as required.

Having thus described. the invention, what I claim is:
