.T au whmfit may concern:
Be it k own amt-i, JOaN M. BARR, it @aiA zen:A of `tl`i"eUnit'ed States,I and a resident of t 'Pittsburg,'in' thefcounty of Allegheny and 4State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new sim le and durable means for e ectually holl ing the coils of open slot machines in po-.
sition, against the action of centrifugahmagnetic rand .other forces tending to displace them' and at the same time to procide the operating advantages which ertain to machines having partially close slots.
Induction motors and other dynamo-elec- -tric machine are voften utilized in rolling mills and other places where continuous operation is' desired'and where'material .loss

would result if considerable time was required for repairing their windings. In such cases, it is es eciaily desirable that the core slots be of tie ope typehaving substantially parallel `side w lls, so that injured coils maybe replaced without difficulty.
According to my present invention, I provide means for holding the coils 'of open slot machines in position and 'at the same time securing t-he well known advantages incident tothe use of partially closed slots.
Figure 1. of the accompanying drawings, is a partially sectional elevation of a portion of a dynamo-electric machine member pro-r vided with one of Vmy coil-retaining devices and Fig. '2 is a similar view showing a modiiication of my invention. l
Referriner to Fig. 1. of the drawings, the structure illustrated coinprisesa magnetizable core 1 having a plurality of teeth 2 which formv slots Bt-o receive coils l and are provided with grooves 5 in their sides and The coils l are held in position by wedges S each of which coinprises side pieces 9 and 10 of insulating material having lateral projections or beads 11 and 12 which are adapted to engage the grooves 5 in adjacent teeth of the core structure. The pieces 9 and 10 are spaced apart by a resilient magnetizable strip 1b which engages slots 14 and 15 therein and bowed Sp ecication of Letters Patent.

inwardl from edge to edge i" henthe n' narno-e ectric machine l 'in operation tige magnetizable strips 13 will be subjected to considerable magnetic .i fluences tending to dis lace them, and, if `he wedges are @me botied in the rotating member, centrifu al forces will also 'tend to displace them-and ne coils.
wedges constructed in accordance with my invention but any force which tends to move ,them nearer the mouths of the core slots also tends to bend the strips 13 outwardly and thus more rmly into the gr'poves 5.
Referring now to Fig. E, of the drawing, the core parts are the san e as in Fig. 1 and the wedges'l may have the same form as the wedges 8 but, in this modification, the side pieces 17 and 1S are, either wholly or partially, of magnetizble material and are separated from the adjacent ortions of the core by insulating materia 19. In this structure, the intermediate resilient strip 20y is composed of non-magnetic material such, for example, as bronze and is insulated from the side pieces 1T and 1S by suitable nonconducting material.
It will be observed that both forms of my invention constitute reliable coil-retaining means and also provide the operating conditions incident to'partially closed slots without relinquisliing the construction and repair advantages which pertain to open slot machines.
My improved wedge structure is` of course, not limited in its application to any specific class of electrical apparatus, and I desire that only such limitations shall be imposed as are indicated in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1.l In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a magnetizable core member having a plurality of coil-containing slots, of wedges for holding the coils in position each of which comprises insulating side pieces. and a resilient magnetizable spacci' between said pieces.
L?. In a dynamo-electricmachine, the combination with a niagn'etlzable core member having a plurality oi' coil-containing slots `and longitudinal grooves near the mouths ol' the slots. of wedges for holding the coils in position each of which comprises beaded pieces of insulating material that engage the grooves and a resilient bowed. spacing strip These forces are not only resisted by of 'magnetizable material which tends to force the insulating pieces into the grooves. 3. ln a dynamo-electric machine, the Conibination with a magnetizable core ineinber having teeth which form slots flor the recep tion ol coils and zne'pi'ovided with grooves in their sides and adjacent, to their 'free ends, of Wedges forfholding the Coils in' position in the slots euch of which ,comprises pieces oi insulatingi material having lateral projections or beads tlnit'ljitinto the groove and a. resilient bowed Spacing, strip of niagnotizzible mnterial which, tends, under the influencel ol eX-. tiernnl forces. to force the pieces into the grooves:
l. In :i dyimmo-electric machine., a core having ooil-oontining slots and coil-retain l ing wedges each oi-,which comprises tiro side pieces' and an inniardly' curved intermediate strip, at least one oi' saiCl wedge parts being` niagnetizable 5. in a dyn:nnoelertrio inne-bine., n rore l 'having ooil-contuining slots provided with `grooves in their side Wallsyfinc coil-retaining wedges each of which comprises side pieces.
to engage said 0roove's und nn intermediate resilient strip or' inwindliv rnrving contour, it least one, but noty all ol said edge parts being magnetizzible. v
In u dynanio-electrir nnicliine, :i core 'having Coil-re.tainingv slots provi-ded with grooves in their side walls an( 'coil-retaining Wedges each of which comprises side pieces to engage said grooves und u resilient, inwardly curved strip, zit least one of sind Wedge parts being' magnetizable.
