IMPROVEMENT IN MOULDING- CRUGIBLES AND POTTERS WME.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM NEWKUMET, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Apparatus for Moulding Orucibles and Potters Ware; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of referenee marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which-- Figure I is a vertical section through line A B, (see Fig. 1H,) and represents the apparatus with the variable slide-former P expanded, and 'owered into the mould N, for the purpose of shaping the interior surface of the crucible or other vessel to be moulded.
Figure II is a vertical section through line C D, (see Fig. 1,) representing the variable former P in a raised or elevated position, in order to permit the removal ofthe formed vessel from the mould N.
Figure III represents a horizontal section of the slide-frame K, mould N, and variable former P, when fully expanded, as shown in Fig. I.
Figure IV represents a side elevation of the variable slide-former P, consisting of two halves, the latter in expanded position.
Figure V' is a plan of the slide-former P, in its contracted position. 7

My invention uses the known device of forming vessels of clay, or other plastic material, by means of a mpuld fixed in the centre of a circular revolving table.
But, instead of using the human hand, or a piece of wood or metal, for pressing the plastic material against the inner side of the mould, I use a variable slideformer, arranged to' be lowered, or placed inside the mould, and, at the same time, expanded, in order to form the interior of the vessel to the desired shape, and which, by contracting it, permits its lifting out of the mould again.
My apparatus for manufacturing crucibles or potters ware, is composed of three different devices:
First, of the device to efiect the lowering 'andlifting in and out of the mould of the'former P.
Second, of the device to produce m'ce verse rotary motion to the slide-former and mould.
Third, of the device to eflect the expansion and contraction of the slide-former.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
First, the device, to efl'ect the lowering and lif ing of the variable slide-formerin and out of the mould, consists of the slide-frame K, (see Fig. 1;) of the horizontal spur-wheel shaft t, with the spur-wheels h h, and the hand-wheel x fastened to it; of the screw s, fixed to.
the cross top-piece of the slide-frame K; of the nut f, fitting screw s, and forming the centre of the handwheel 10; of the grooved hub o, (fitting spindle q loosely,) containing the joints 0 c of the connectingrods y y, the latter transmitting motion to the slides, of which the former P consists, by means of the pins 0 c passing through the fork-projections, seen at the top of each former-slide, and the connecting-rods y y of the circular strap u, surrounding hub 0, and forming a portion to the hand-wheel w, by means of the studs c 'v', and of the pin 0*, seen belowthe slide-frame K, (see Fig; 1,) regulating or stopping the slide-frame K, when lowered, at such a point as to afl'ect the thickness of the bottom of the vessel to be moulded.
The vertical sides of the slide-frame K are provided with a vertical gear, corresponding with the pitch of the spur-wheels It h, fastened to 'the shaft t, in line with the vertical gears, to permit transmission of motion to slide-frame K, whenever hand-wheelx is forced to turn.
As all the above-named parts are in directconnection, from top part of slide-frame K down to the joints 0 c seen at the top of the slides of the former P, any motion given to wheel as will operate the spindle q, with parts fastened to it, and those in connection with such, up or down, according to the direction the wheel x had received, by means of which the lowering and v lifting of the variable slide-former P are effected.
At its lower part, P is fastened to the lower end of the spindle g by means of pin z, which passes through both slides of the former P and the spindle g. This connection keeps the former-slides with their inner face in contact, but allows them to be moved against each other, and vice verso.
Second, the device to produce contrary, rotary motions to the slide-former P and mould N against each other, consists of the circuiar revolving mould-table T, fastened to the vertical spindle n,- of thebevel-gear i 'i, one wheel of which is fastened to spindle at, its match i, and the pulley H to the horizontal shaft 9 of the belt m,- of the pulley L, and bevel-wheel R, both fastened to the upper horizontal shaft Y ofthe bevel-match R upon spindle q, its,top end being so arranged as to permit the lifting and lowering of the spindle without causing bevel-wheel R to move in such direction, and also to transmit motion, that is, revolving motion, to spindle q of the mould N, constructed of two or more parts, fastened upon the centre of the circular revolving table T by means of the screws d d,.the hook c, in connection with pin p, sand 1) holding the mouldparts together against the circular projection seen on the top of the revolving table '1. The lower part of the mould N, with the lower part of the slide-former P, and the projection seen upon centre-table '1, produce the bottom of the vessel to be formed.
Any motion given to the belt or will move or turn both pulleys, H and L, in like direction; but, transmitting such motion, by means of the bevel-gears, to
the spindle q andcircular mould-plate or table '1, it causes the table T to revolve in contrary direction to the spindle q, and therefore the variable slide-tbrmer P too.
Third, the device to effect the expansion and contraction of the variable slide-former P consists of the screw s, fastened to the top cross-piece of the slideframe K; of the corresponding nut f, forming the centre of the hand-wheel w; or the grooved hub o, with the pin-holes c c, and the sufiounding strap u,
the latter being fastened to the nut hand-wheel w by means of the studs 'v o of the inclined rods y y, connecting the former-slides by means of the pins 0 c, and the fork-projections, seen at the top of the formerslides, through which pinsc 0' pass.
To efl'ectthe contraction of the slide-former P, nut f is turned upwards by means of turning the handwheel w, causing strap a and hub o to follow, as Well as the connecting-rods y y. This movement forces the rods 9 y in the upward. position, as indicated by the red lines seen in Fig. I, and draw thereby the former-slides toward each other. The expansion of the former-slides is elfectedby turning the nut f toward the mould N, as shown in Fig. I.
Fig. V shows an oblong opening in the top part of the former-slides, fitting the diameter of the spindie q, whereby a bearing'is given to the slides of the former, and thereby steadiness.
The plate \V, seen above the mould N, with its openings on its periphery, opposite each other, fitting over the fork-projections fastened to the top of the. former-slides, has the object also to prevent the slides of the formers from being forced apart While in motion.
The oblong opening, seen at the top of the formerslides, has also the object to permit the expansion of the slides of the former, without I interfering with the spindle q. I
Having now described my invention,
I desire to secure, by Letters Patent, the following claims:
1. The variable slide-former P, coustructedas described, in combination with the arrangement, by means of which the degree of contraction and expansion of the former-slides, or theirpositions to each other, is effected, substantially and for the purposes specified.
2. The revolving variable slide-former P, and vertically-sliding frame K, in combination with a divisible mould, fastened to a reverse-revolving table, substan tially as described, and for the purpose specified.
