ISAAC 1*. STEWART, OF ELIDA, OIIIO.
ENDLESS CARRIER.
No. 861,484. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 30, 1907.
Application filed November 19 1906. Serial No. 344,125.
To all whom it may concern: as at 6. The flaps form the effective bottom of the car- Be it known that I, ISAAC F. STEWART, a citizen of rior. Those flaps which are on the upper lead of the the United States, residing at Elida, in the county of carrier will by their own gravity dispose themselves in Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and I substantially horizontal positions, each flap partly useful Improvements in Endless Carriers; and I do deoverlapping the next adjacent flap, so that the said Clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descripflaps become effective to carry the material on the uption of the invention, such as will enable others skilled per lead of the carrier. As the flaps pass over the roller in the art to which it appertains to make and use the or pulleys a at the discharge end. of the carrier, they same. drop by their own gravity into a vertical position and My invention is an improved endless carrier Comall of the flaps on the lower lead of the carrier remain in prising an endless chain provided with pivotally such vertical position and open the spaces between them, and hence the accumulation of material on the mounted flaps, which lie in a substantially horizontal position on the upper lead of the chain and partly overinner sides of the said flaps corresponding to the inner sides of the carrier is prevented. As the flaps pass up lap each other to form a carrying belt or apron, and drop to a vertical position on the lower lead of the chain on the opposite pulleys or roller b, they reassume their to prevent material from gathering on the inner side of overlapping iti as shown the carrier, and it consists in the construction and com- From the foregoing description, taken in connection bination of devices hereinafter described and claimed. with the accompanying drawing the construction and In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a s d operation of the invention will be readily understood elevation of an endless carrier embodying my improveitho t requiring 2], more t d d l ti ments; Fig. 2 is a detail top plan view of the same; and Various changes in the form, proportion, and the Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of the minor details of construction may be resorted to without same. departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the My improved endless carrier comprises an endless ad antage f thi invention, a defined by the apchain 1 and flaps 2, which are pivotally mounted and ded l i are connected to and carried by certain of the links of the chain. Each of the chain links is made from a single piece of wire or rod bent to formthe straight intermediate portion 3 and the arms 4 at the ends thereof, the end portion of the wire or rod forming said arms being bent to form eyes 5. The intermediate portion 3 of each link is pivotally mounted in the eyes 5 of the next adjacent link, so that the links are flexibly connected together. Certain of the links at suitable distances apart are provided with flaps 2, which are here shown as of rectangular form. These flaps may be made of any suitable material, such as canvas, sheet iron, or leather, and may be either flexible or inflexible. The length of said flaps is such that when they are connected to certain of the chain links, said flaps may partly overlap one another. Each flap has one of its edges, which I will call its front edge, bent around and secured to the intermediate portion 3 of one of the links, i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
An endless carrier comprising an endless chain com posed of links, each of which has a cross bar and arms at an angle thereto, at the ends thereof, having eyesfor pivotal engagement with the cross bar of the next adjacent link, and flaps, each pivoted at one end to the cross bar of one of the links, said flaps when on the lower lead or the carrier depending from said lower lead and disposing themselves by gravity in substantially vertical open posi tion and when on the upper lead of said carrier, disposing themselves in substantially horizontal position, and being of such length as to partly overlap when in such horizontal position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ISAAC F. STEIVART.
