FRED LYLE LYlWfAN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1907.
Application filed July 14,1906. Serial No. 326,261.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED LYLE LYMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, in lhe State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to devices for holding a book in an open position, and its object is to provide a new and improved holder, more especially designed for use on the shelf of a piano, organ or a similar musical instrument, and arranged to hold a music book open at any desired page and without danger of marring the instrument or tearing or otherwise injuring the book cover or the leaves.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear perspective view in detail of one end of the front bar.
The holder. illustrated in the drawings is preferably made from a single piece of wire, bent to form transverse base bars A, placed a suitable distance apart and terminating at their rear ends in upwardly extending back bars B, from the upper ends of which extend downwardly and forwardly spring arms 0 reaching with their lower ends within a short distance of the base bars A. The spring arms C operate in conjunction with a front bar D connecting the outer ends of L- shaped arms E with each other, the said Lshaped arms E extending upwardly and outwardly from the front ends of the base bars A. The inner surface of the front bar D is preferably roughened at or near the ends thereof, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3. In order For instance, as shown in the drawings,
two pieces of rubber tubing are used, one covering each base bar A, its back bar B, a portion of the upper end of the spring arm (1 and the vertical member of the corresponding L-shaped arm E.
In using the device on the shelf of a piano, organ or a similar musical instrument, for instance, to hold a music book in an open position, it is only necessary to place the holder on the shelf, to open the book to the desired page, then press the covers of the book against the arms to swing the same rcarwardly and allow of pushing the book down until the bottom edges of the book covers rest on the base bars A. The oper ator new releases the book, so that the spring arms (,3 press the lower end of the book forward and the open pages against the front bar D, to securely hold the book in an open position, the covers of which rest on the upwardly and rearwardly slanting spring arms 0, thus giving the desired usual inclination to the book besides holding it in open position.
The device shown and described is very simple and durable in construction and can be cheaply manufactured.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A holder. comprising a stand having cud base bars for the book to rest on, back bars extending upwardly from the end bars, a front bar connecting the base bars for extending across the leaves of the open book, and spring, arms depending from the upper ends of the said back bars and adapted to press against the covers of the open hook to hold the leaves in contact with the said front bar.
holder made of a single piece of wire and coin pri in; base bars terminating at their front ends in upward and outwardly extending Lshapcd arms, a front bar connecting the terminals of the said L-shaped arms with each other. back bars rising from the rear terminals of the said base bars. and spring arms extending down wardly and forwardly from the upper ends of the said back bars to within a short distance of the said base burs and a distance below the said front bar.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesss.
