WILLIAM B. ELLSWORTH, OF HUDSON, OHIO.
THILL-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1907.
Application filed March 5, 1907- Serial No. 360,716.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM B. ELLswoR'rIr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hudson, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thill-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to supply unique means for holding the thills, shafts or poles of vehicles elevated either when hitching or unhitching, or when storing the vehicle when not required for immediate service, so that the thills or like draft appliance may be out of the way.
Inasmuch as the invention is particularly designed [or supporting thills it is shown in this connection in the accompanying drawings, in which:
vFigure l. is a perspective view of a wagon body and thills, showing the latter held elevated by neans constructed in accordance with the invention. detail view of the supporting means.
The support consists of a spanner l and connectors 2 and 3. The spanner consists of an iron of approximately U-i'orm, the spaced legs or members 1 thereof being adapted to clear the edge of the dash-board or other part of the vehicle body which would be liable to make contact with the support if the same were straight throughout its length. The connectors 2 and 3 preferably consist of straps, each having one end fitted to the reduced end 5 of a leg or member of the spanner by being bent or folded upon itself to embrace the reduced end 5, the folded portion being fastened in any convenient way commonly employed in joining the ends of straps. Each connector or strap is provided with a series of openings (3 to make adjustable connection with a portion of the vehicle body and with the thills or other draft appliance fitted to the vehicle and adapted to be held elevated. The opening 6 may be of any form according to the design of fastening adapted to enter and cooperate therewith. As shown the openings 6 are enlarged at one end and contracted at the opposite end presenting the appearance of a keyhole. The fastenings 7 applied to the vehicle body and thills are of the Fig. 2 is a.
headed type, hence the keyhole form of the openings, the head of the fastenings passing through the enlarged portion of the openings and the shank of said fastenings entering the contracted portion of said openings.
As indicated in Fig. l the fastening 7 applied to the vehicle body is attached to the bottom thereof and the fastening applied to the thills is located upon the under side of the cross-bar. The support when in position has one strap connected to the fastening 7 of the thills and the other strap attached to the fastening of the vehicle body, the parts being adjusted to admit of the spanner 1 receiving an edge portion of the dash-board. The elevation of the thills may be regulated by adjustably connecting the outer or foremost strap 3 with the fastening thereof without changing the relative position of the spanner. The spanner prevents injury to the dash-board or vehicle body either by pressure or abrasive action and at the same time enables a direct strain between the fastenings of the thills and the vehicle body. It is to be understood that the support may be connected to any convenient part of the thills and vehicle body or running gear according to the design or construction of vehicle for which the invention is adapted.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: r
1. A thill support comprising a spanner, straps secured to the outer ends of the legs or members of the spanner and having a series of openings in their length to admit of adjustable connection of either strap with the thills or body of a vehicle.
2. in combination with a vehicle comprising a body and thills and having fastenings applied to each, a support for holding the thills elevated, the same comprising an ap proximately U-shaped iron and straps attached at one end to the ends of the legs or members of said iron and provided in their length with a series of openings.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
