UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. WADE, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
WASHIhTG-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1907.
Application filed May 24,1906. Serial N0. 318,475.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns F. WADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others' skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in washing machines of that class which are operated by hand and especially designed for use in the house-hold.
The object of the invention-is to provide a practical machine of this character which will be durable and inexpensive in construction and which will save both time and labor in cleaning all kinds of clothes and fabric.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed; and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view, partly in section, of my improved washing machine, and Fig. 2 is avertical sectional view through the same.
My improved washing machine comprises a platform or bench P having an extended portion upon one side from which rises an upright or standard S strengthened by inclined braces s. In the upper portion of the standard is formed a transverse aperture or opening a adapted to receive one end of a hand lever L which is adapted to operate an agitator or plungery in a receptacle or tub R arranged upon the platform. This receptacle is of trusto-conical form and has a large circular base 1 surrounded by an inwardly inclined annular wall T which latter forms a contracted circular top r as clearly comprises a rod having its reduced upper end detachably pivoted in a vertical slot or opening in the lever L by a removable pin 90 and, upon its lower end a plurality oi wire loops K adapted to receive and hold the clothes M to be washed. These loops are of U-shape and are arranged in an annular row so as to project radially from the rod y. The free end of the lever L is provided with a cross piece 0 which serves as a handle, and its opposite end projects through the opening a in the standard Sand is provided with a cross pin Z which retains it in said opening but at the same time permits it to have free movement in said opening. The lever is permitted to have free movement in all directions by forming the opening a in the standard with walls a which are inclined or flared outwardly, that isyaway from the lever. These inclined walls a of said opening make the inner end of the latter of much greater size than the outer end oi the same so that said outer end serves as the real fulcrum for the lever.
From the foregoing it .will be seen that by mounting the lever as set forth it may be shifted so that the agitator or pounder'may be reciprocated in any portion of the receptacle and that by making the latter with the over hanging wall r the water in the receptacle will be caused to more effectively circulate through the clothes in the loops K as the machine is operated. By mounting the lever so that it has free movement in all directions the agitator may also be readily removed from the vessel to permit the clothes to be inserted in or removed from its loops K. It will be further noted that the machine is exceedingly simple in construction so that it may be produced at a small cost and will be strong and durable in use.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
A washing machine comprising a platform, a standard arranged upon one side of the same and formed with the opening a, a receptacle arranged upon the platform, a hand lever having one end projecting through the opening in the standard and provided with the transverse cross pin 1, the agitator rod y pivoted to the lever and projectinginto the receptacle, and the radially projecting U-shape clothes receiving loops K arranged in an annular row upon the lower end of said rod, substantially as deshown in Fig. 2. The agitator or plunger y scribed JAMES F. WADE.
