UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NAIL-CLENCHING TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 27, 1907.
Application filed June 13, 1907. Serial No. 378,803.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ELDmoen A. NoBLE'r, a citizen of v the United States, residing at Heavener, in the county of Leflore and Indian Territory, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Clenching Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tool designed to clench horseshoe nails, after the latter are driven to fasten a shoe. j
The improvement comprises a pair of clenching jaws, and adjustable means for properly fitting the tool over the head of a nail which is to be clenched.
The invention also relates to the specific details of construction and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawingFigure 1 is a view in elevation of the tool, showing its application. Fig. 2 is a similar view,
- a nail having been clenched. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the tool.
The numeral 1 represents a member formed at one end with a jaw having a seat 2, for the nail head, which is slightly beveled for convenience in operation. The member 1, is also provided with a handle, in the lower side of which is formed a series of notches 3.
4, indicates a clenching member having an angularly disposed portion 5, formed with a slot 5, through which passes the member 1, a pin 6, extending across the slot, and engaging one of the notches 3,t0 pivotally fasten the members together. The member 4, is bent at '7, to provide a handle 8, which is substantially parallel with the handle of member 1. The opposite end of member l, is bent at 9, and is then bent upwardly as at 1.0, to form a clenching surface 11. The surface 11, is provided with a series of angularly disposed teeth 12, to facilitate the clenching action when the tool is in use.
Secured by a bolt 13, to the underside of the member 1, is a spring element 14, which terminates at its free end in a vertical fork l5, straddling the seat 2. The forked ends extend up beyond the seat to engage the nail groove of a horseshoe and embrace the head of the nail to properly locate the tool when positioning it. The spring element also performs the function of holding the pin 6, in one of the notches 3, and thereby prevents the displacement of the two members, at the same time affording a convenient means for adjusting the clencher member for operating upon horseshoes of different sizes.
In operation the members are spaced apart, the forked ends 15, fitting in the groove of the horseshoe and embracing the head of the nail, while the clenching surface impinges the point of the nail on the face of the.
hoof. The tool having been located for operation, the handles of the members are pressed together, which forces the seat upwardly against the nail head and drives it further into the hoof, and the point against the clencher surface, the latter being forced toward the nail, and downwardly on the face of the hoof and bending or clenching the nail end. To adjust the members, the spring element is forced from the member 1, when member 2, can be moved sufliciently to withdraw the pin from its notch, and it can be located in eithenof the other notches, whereupon the spring element is permitted to assume normal position and will hold the two members together.
What I claim is:
1. A tool for the purpose described, comprising two members, one of which is formed with a nail seat, the other said member having a curved serrated clenching surface, and a spring eIement forked at its end to embrace the seat and secured to one of the members, the fork of the spring member extending beyond the seat, as and for the purpose described.
2. A tool of the character described, comprising two members, one of which is formed with a series of notches, the other said member having a pin to engage one of the notches, and a spring element formed with a fork to embrace one of the members, said spring element holding the pin in the notch.
A tool of the character described, comprising two members, one of which is formed with a series of notches, the other said member having a slot through which the first member passes, :1 pin extending across the slot, :1 spring element fastened to the member having the notches and formed at its free end with a fork to embrace and extend beyond the edge of said member.
4. A tool of the character described, comprising two members, a pin on one member engaging a notch formed on the companion member, a spring element formed with a fork which embraces and extends beyond the operative face of one of the members, said :lfork serving as a guide for the member it embraces when operating the tool.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
