ELIOT KEEN, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1907,
Applicaition filed June 22,1906. Serial No. 322,827.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIOT KEEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State ofNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Producing Moving-Picture Eflects, of which the following is a s ecification.
My invention re ates to improvements in devices for producing moving picture efi'ects.
Heretofore the devices of this character known as thumb books, were erated by firmly grasping the bound end oi the book, loosel grasping the free ends of the pages and t en releasmg them in quick succession, which mode of operation was attended with a great disadvantage as the ages of the book, on account of being firm y grasped at the bound end of the .book, were retarded from turning over as quickly and as far as re quired, with the result that the pictures were not entirely exposed to view.
The object of my invention is there'f obviate the necessity for grasping end of the book and therefore leave the p es thereof free to turn quickly i'ar eno fully expose the pictures to viev;
A further object of my invention is to u vid-e means for supporting the thumb boon so as to accomplish the above object and to provide means for carrying the t book through the mails without necessitat ing an envelop.
A- further object of'my invention is to accomplish the above mentioned objects in the most simple, inexpensive and effective man:
in the drawings: Figure 3 is a perspective view of my device, showing the manner of grasping and operating the same. Fig, 2 is an per face view thereof, and Fig. 3 a central ongitudinal sectional view thereof.
Like referencecharacters designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawin s illustrating my invention.
Referring to the drawings, ll designates a thick card which maybe of any desired or attractive shape, preferably oblong and having An 0 ening, preferably beveled edges 2. rectangular is provided 111 the card at the right hand end, as viewedfrom the drawings,
and a thick card 4, preferably apost card, is pasted or otherwise secured to the upper face of the card 1 covering the opening ther through and forming a rectangular compartserve the right 'ment 5 opening through the under face. A
ed are secured or bound together at one end by a staple 7 or other suitable means and their other ends are left free.
The thumb book is secured so as to adapt it to be swung into and out of the compartment 1 by means of a strib 8, one end of which is pasted or otherwise secured to the face of the outer page of the thumb book and the other end pasted or otherwise secured between the inner faces of the cards 1 and 4. A button 9 is pivoted to the card 1 so as to adapt it to be turned over the thumb book when it is desired to retain it in the compartment 5 and turned off the thumb book when it is desired to swing it out of said compartment to exhibit the picwill be appreciated that by reason of thumb book being contained wlthin t compartment 5 and hinged to the cards vhicli are adapted to be held in one hand of he operator, that when it is swung out of said recess on y the free ends of the pages be grasped and released thus leaving hem free and unretarded to quickly and ully expose the pictures thereon to view and will also be appreciated that when the book is secured within the recess 5 in the card i it is in a very compact convenient form for mailing.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise details and arrangements of parts shown and described, but re to all modifications within the sec e of my invention.
li aving now described my invention what claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters vPatent, is zy l'. in a device of the character set forth, a card having elcompartment opening through one face of the card and a thumb book hinged therein, substantially as described.
2 In a device of the character set forth, card having a com artment opening through one face of the card and a thumb book hinged therein and means bindin the pa es thereof together at one end, su stantiaily as described.
3. In a device of thecharacter set forth, a
IIC
thereof and the other end to the under face of said card, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the character set forth, a
card having a compartment opening through one face of the card, a thumb book hinged therein and means for securing said book within said compartment, substantially as described. a
5. In adevioe of the character set forth, a card having an opening, a card secured' to one face of the first mentioned card and 00V- ering said opening through that face, and a thumb book hinged in said opening, substant aily as described.
6. In a device of the character set forth, a card having an opening, a card secured to one face of the first mentioned card and covering said opening through that face, a thumb book hinged therein and means binding the pages thereof together, substantially as descrlbed.
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 20th day of June, A. D. 1906.
ELIOT KEEN.
