Be it known that I, TILLIAM GREENE DE Burns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Petronia, in the county of Lowndes and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Cotton-Press, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to cotton presses, and more particularly to a novel form of scale attachment and weight indicator combined therewith.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and ready means whereby a ginner can produce bales of uniform size and weight, in which danger of breaking the press by overfeeding is obviated, and in which remnants or small bulks of cotton belonging to several owners may be combined in one bale and each owner know precisely the amount of cotton included.
lVith the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novelconstruction and combination of parts of a scale attachment and weight indicator for cotton presses, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts :Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a cotton press exhibiting the improvements of the present invention combined therewith. Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view taken on the line 33, Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrow thereon. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 44, Fig. 2 and looking in the direction of the arrow thereon. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view, taken on the line 55 in Fig. 1.
The frame of the press, in this instance comprises a pair of longitudinal sill beams 1, four standards or supports 2, and two top beams 3. The uprights are connected and braced intermediate of their ends by tiebeams 1 of which there are four employed in this instance, although it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to this number.
The sill beams have rigidly secured to them a pair of beams 5 carrying a threaded nut 6 provided with a gear wheel 8 whereby it may be operated, and engaging a screw 7 carrying a follower 9.
The press box, as usual, is an open-work rectangular structure comprising slats 10 that are secured near their lower ends to longitudinal and. transverse braces 11 and 12 respectively, and near their upper ends to similar braces 13 and 14, respectively. The press box is mounted for swinging movement between the uprights and is held out of contact therewith and limited in its mevements by links 15 secured to the uprights and to the ends of the respective braces 11, 12, 13 and 14. The frame of the press is still further braced by tie-rods 16 rigidly attached to the upper and lower cross beams 1 and 3. The parts, so far described, may be of the character in common use, and their exact construction forms no essential part of the present invention.
The present improvements reside in a novel form of scale beam for supporting the press box and a novel form of indicator or scale coacting therewith. The scale beam portion of the invention comprises a pair of beams 17, in this instance shown as circular in cross section, although if preferred they may be secured a pair of eyes 18, through which passes a pin 19 that is engaged by the eye of a shackle 20, the crest or bend of which rests upon a knife edge bearing 21 carried by a bail 22. It will be understood that there is a counterpart of this arrangement at each corner of the upper portion of the press, so that a description of one will serve for all.
Secured to each beam and projecting radially at approximately right angles to the eyes 18 is a pair of arms 23, one being located adjacent to each end of each of the beams, and these arms are engaged by the upper ends of pairs of rods 24; provided with. knife edge bearings 25 to work upon the arms. The lower ends of the rods engage adjustable eye bolts 26 that project through the braces 13 and carry at their lower ends adjusting nuts 27 by wnieh to effect proper adjustment of the press box supported thereon. Each beam carries at one end a lever 28, the two levers being combined with the beams in any preferred manner and projecting inward approximately to the center of the press and carry dmvnward extending coneshaped bearings 29 that are designed to en.- gage similarly shaped recesses or depressions 29 in a pair of plates 30 carried by shackles 31 that engage with a ring or eye 82 combined with the lower end of the rack bar or member that actuates the pointer 33 of the polygonal, near each end of each of which is- ITO secured to one of the cross beams It will be seen from the foregoing description that by the manner of sup )orting the press box upon the beams 17, that it will be free to have a limited range of vertical movements, and by the manner of combining the levers 28 with the shackles 31, free vibratory movement of all the parts may be had without interfering with. the indicating mechanism.
Arranged. within the press box is a head 36 which is supported by two cross pieces 37 secured within the box, and receives the weight of the cotton, while the follower Q is adapted to move to and from the press box as may be necessary in the operation of the machine to lift the head, and effect compression.
In the foregoing, the invention has been shown as applied to a single-hex press of ordinary construction; it wil be understood that the invention may with equal readiness be applied to double presses, such as are now most freepiently employed; and it is to be distinctly understood that the right is reserved to apply the invention. to double as well as to single presses.
By the arrangement of scale and indicating mechanism shown, bales of uniform weight and size may be produced, and further, where several bulks of cotton are placed in the press, each belonging to a different owner, accurate record may be kept of the cotton. so pressed.
I claim 1. In a baling press, the combination. with. the press box, of a scale, a pair of beams operativcly connected. with the press box, levers carried by the beams, and connections between the levers and the scale.
2. In a baling press, the combination with frame and. a press box supported thereby, of a pair of beams carried by the frame, con.- nections between the beams and the press box, scale, and levers carried by the beams and operatively connected with the scale.
3. in a baling press, the combination. with a frame and a press box supported for limited vertical movements relatively thereto, of knife edge bearings supported. by the fran'ie, a pair of beams carrying shackles that engage the knife edge bearings, levers carried. by the beams, knife edge bearings carried by the opposed terminals of the levers, a scale, and shackles operatively connected with the rack bar of the scale and carrying plates with which the knife edge bearings of the levers engage.
