Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application filed January 4, 1906. Serial No. 294,587.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY BORN, merchant, of Ringbahnstrasse 128, Halensee, near Berlin, a subject of the King of Prussia, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper- Fasteners, from which the following is a clear description.
My invention relates to fasteners for detachably connecting a plurality of sheets or patterns and an improvement over existing fasteners as regards the simplicity of construction, mode of attaching, and the firmness with which'they hold together layers of considerable thickness at their corners as well as along their edges.
The improved fasteners clamp the materials with a tong-like action, and thus prevent the same from becoming unfastened.
- In the accompanying drawings different forms of the improved fastener are shown, namely:
Figure 1 shows a cut and unbent blank for forming the fastener. Fig. 2 shows a transverse section of the bent blank. Fig. 3 shows a form of the fastener in use at the corner of the sheets; Fig. 4, a double fastener for uniting sheets along their sides. Figs. 5 and 6 are sectional views of the fastener in closed position; and Figs. 7, 8, and 9 show end views of the closed fastener, showing modified forms of the clamping jaws or edges.
The improved fastener comprises a properly-shaped sheet of metal bent into U shape and having its hinged or rear portion partly cutout, as shown. The longitudinal edges of the recess out out in'the rear portion are bent inward and form the edges or clamping-jaws b and c, which take hold of the material d to be fastened together. The edges are so formed that when the materials are compressed between them they take over each other vertically, as shown in Fig. 5, 0r shear-like, as shown in Fig. 6. These clamping jaws or edges 1) and 0 may be smooth, as shown in Fig. 7, serrated, as shown in Fig. 8, or undulated, as shown in Fig. 9. The clamping-jaws may be formed double or in multiple clamps, as indicated in Fig. 4.
To apply the fasteners the materials to be secured together are either pushed at one corner through the recess cut out in the rear portion of the fastener or the edges of the material are laid against the inside of the clamp at the back. When the clamp is compressed, the clamping edges or jaws b and 0 will firmly hold the materials together by being passed into the body of the material. It will be readily seen, owing to the clamping jaws or edges b and 0 being near the inner or bent end of the fastener, they can more easily and readily be depressed or forced into the material to be fastened together for the reason that a longer leverage is provided for applying the force when said force is applied at the outer ends of the metal sections a a than when it must be applied near the edges 1) and c, as is the case when said edges are at the outer end of the fastener.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. A fastener comprising a suitably U- shaped bent plate having a longitudinal slit or recess at its back or bent section, fastening jaws or edges projecting inward and formed from the material cut out by the longitudinal slit or recess, said fastenin jaws or edges situated near the bent end and removed from the free end of the fastener and adapted to clamp the material inserted between the bent plate when the fastener is compressed.
2. A fastener comprising a suitably U- shaped bent plate having a longitudinal slit or recess at its back or bent section, serrated fastening jaws or edges projecting inward and formed from the material cut out by the longitudinal slit or recess, said fastening jaws or edges situated near the bent end and removed from the free end of the fastener and adapted to clamp the material inserted between the bent plate when the fastener is compressed.
3. A fastener comprising a suitable U- shaped bent plate having a plurality of. separated longitudinal slits or recesses at its back or bent section, fastening jaws or edges projecting inward and formed from the material cut out by the longitudinal slits or recesses, said fastening jaws or edges situated near the bent end and removed from the free end of the fastener and adapted to clamp the material inserted between the bent plate when the fastener is compressed.
