Grain Separator.
Patented Jan; 19, 1869.
QF'vlqi N. PETERS. Phoivuthognphen d i finder GEORGE BRINGMAN, OF GETTYSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 85,992, dated Ja'nua/ry 19, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN G-RAIN-SEPARATORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. BRINGMAN, of Gettysburg, in the county of Adams, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Separators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference'inarked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figures 1 and 2 represent side views of my grainseparator, and
Figure 3, a longitudinal central section of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a grain-separator, in which is employed a revolving perforateiil inclined cylinder, supported at its outer or lower end, by suitable framing, and supplied at its inner or upper end, within the casing of the separa tor, with a cogged surface, gearing into a pinion on the shaft or axle of the driving-wheel, around which passes a belt, connecting with a pulley on the shaft of the fan- 'ning-whcel, and providing the opposite end of the axle of the driving-wheel with acam, engaging with a bar suitably attached to the shaking-apparatus, for operating the same, in connection with such other devices as will be hereinafter described.
To enable others to manufacture and employ myinvention, I will now describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings A represents a frame, which consists of two upright boards, suitably braced at their upper and lower ends.
B represents another frame, placed in an inclined position, and secured at its inner or upper end to inner sides of the frame A, at the front part.
This frame is supported at its outer or lower end by means of pivoted legs a a, which can be easily folded up out of the way, when desired.
0 is a perforated inclinedrevolving cylinder, encircled at its outer and inner ends by rings or wooden bands c c, which are connected together by means of bars or rods 0 c.
The inner ring 0 of cylinder-G is formed on its front surface with a series of cogs, 0 into which gears a pinion, d, on the axle D of the driving-wheel E; the object of said arrangement being to communicate a rotatory motion to the cylinder 0.
F is the shaking-apparatus or sifter, which is supplied with the screens ff, and inclined perforated bottom 9, which is reduced at its lower end, so as to fit into the upper end of the cylinder 0.
The shaker F is held in place by a loop, h, at its upper end, which is attached to one of the cross-braces at the top of frame A, and atits sides by cords or straps h h the cord 7:. connecting with a horizontal pivoted bar, i, at one end, and cord h with the upper end of a spring, m, made of whalebone, or other suitable material; the object of the above being intended to allow the shaker to have an oscillating motion.
G designates the fanning-wheel, made as seen in fig. 3, and having the bearings of its axle in braces secured to the sides of the casing or frame A, over circular openings c in said frame.
' On one end 'of the axle j is a pulley, It, over which passes a belt, I, connecting with the driving-wheel E, for operating the fan.
at is a shield or protector, made semicircular in shape, and secured to the inner sidesof casing A and crossbar 0, for the purpose of forming 'a covering for the fan G.
I is the hopper, into which the grain to be winnowed is placed, it being provided at its lower extremity, on one side, with an opening over which slides a cut-011,1).
The lower opposite portion of the hopper is also provided with a number of bevelled projections, 1X1), which are designed to separate the grain as it falls on the screens ff of shaker F, thereby preventing it from descending in masses, which will greatly facilitate the sifting-process.
The axle D is provided on the end opposite the drivin g-wheel E, outside of frame A, with acam, s, so formed, that when the axle or driving-wheel is in operation, it will, in connection with pivoted ba'r i, against which it strikes, and spring in on the opposite side of frame A, give motion to the shaker F.
What I'claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The inclined perforated revolving cylinder 0, in combination with the frame B and cogs (l and c, all arranged, constructed, and operated substantially as described.
2. The hopper 1, fan G, screens ff, inclined board F, cogs d and c, and cylinder 0, all arranged and operatcd substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
GEO. E. BRINGMAN.
