UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
NELSON RUE, OF HARRODSBUBG, KENTUCKY.
IM PROVEIVI ENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 85,479, dated. December 29, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELSON RUE, of Harrodsburg, in the county of Mercer, and in the State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a gate with braces, so as to be adapted to uneven ground, such as hills, &c.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation, and Fi g. 2 is a plan view.
A A represent boards, placed at suitable distance above each other and secured at each end to boards or bars B B, one on each side, by bolts passing through. Similar boards or bars B B are placed, one on each side, across the center of the boards A A, the bolts, however, being loose enough to allow one end of the gate to be raised higher than the other, when required.
Each panel of' the gate thus formed is provided with two braces, G C, consisting each of two bars, placed one on each side of the gate, pivoted, near the center of the panel, to one of the lower boards by a bolt passing through y them both. The bars forming each brace are connected at their upper end, a suitable distance above the uppermost board, A, by a bolt, a.
Between the upper ends ofthe center boards, B B, a notched bar, D, of wood, metal, or other suitable material, is pivoted. This bar D is pivoted in its center, resting on the -upper board, A, along which it extends a suitable distance on each side from the center, being notched or corrugated 0n its upper side, as seen in the drawings.
At the ends of the gate, between the end bars B B, are pivoted similar notched bars E E, these, however, being pivoted at their ends, extending inward on the top board of the gate.
The braces O C are turned in each panel, one toward the center and one toward the end of t-he gate, so that the bolts a a will t and lock into the notches on these bars D and E. By that means the gate can be braced in any position desired, whether 11p-hill or down-hill7 and when thus braced it is impossible for it to sag down, which is found to be the case with other gates not so braced.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The notched bars E, D, and E, and the pivoted oblique braces C C O G, arranged with the gate A, all as herein specified, and operating as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day oi July, 1868.
NELSON RUE.
