PLAYINGWCARD PACKAGE AND CRlBBAGiE-BOARD.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented March 19, 1907.
Application iiled January 20, 1906. Serial No. 296,938.
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZO O. GEANGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Playing-Card Packages and Cribbage-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel box or case for playing-cards, combining in one article a case for the cards and a cribbage board or counter.
The object of the invention is to provide the original package in which a pack of playing-cards is put up for sale with a means for keeping tally when playing cribbage and other similar games, thereby furnishing the purchaser of the cards with a case that will serve both as a receptacle for the cards and as a cribbage-board.
To this end the invention consists in the described construction of box composed of two parts or sections having holes for pegs or counters constructed and combined for operation as hereinafter set forth.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a combined package and Cribbage-board constructed according to my invention.
Figure l is a perspective view of the package, showing the two sections partly sepa rated. Fig. 2 is a similar view representing the parts put together to form the cribbageboard. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate the parts in section separated from each other and the cover-blanks for the parts before they have been folded.
The parts composing Ithis package are distinguished in this description as the drawer or tray A, that forms the receptacle for the cards, and the case B,in which the drawer is fitted to slide in and out through the end7 the two parts forming when closed one within the other a package about the size of a pack' of cards.
Like other drawer-boxes of similar character, the part or case B is open at both ends, so as to allow the drawer A to be withdrawn at either end of the package, although that is not an important feature in this case, and only one end may be left open, if desired. The two parts A B are usually separable from each other, so that the receptacle A may be drawn out of the case B.
In the bottom of the part A are spaced holes el, arranged in groups and rows after the manner of arranging the pegging-holes in a cribbage-board, and in the top of the inclosing part B a similar series of holes d are made, corresponding in arrangement to the holes in the part A.
Following the well-known arrangement for a Cribbage-board, the holes d d are spaced and described by lines cf, running both longitudinally and transversely of the surfaces, into groups each containing two rows of five holes, and the groups are so divided between the two parts A B that when placed together endwise, with the drawer inserted in the open end of the case and the perforated surfaces turned uppermost,'the two parts form a cribbage-board having the customary. number and arrangement of pegging-holes.
I n that position the two parts are temporarily secured together by inserting a short peg p through holes p, provided in the side of the outer case B and the drawer A, as seen in Fig. 2.
Provision is made for stowing away a bunch of pegs in the drawer by making the latter part of sufficient length to aff ord room for the pegs between the end of the drawer and the pack of cards placed in the drawer.
The parts A B are made of pasteboard, cardboard, or other light material covered with paper, which may be of an ornamental character or may contain advertising matter printed on it. The paper covering the bottom of the drawer and the top of the inclosing case, in which the holes are made for the pegs, is preferably prepared beforehand for the perforations by printing the longitudinal and transverse lines and indicating the holes by spaced dots, which are cut or punctured by suitable means to form the holes after the paper is fixed on the pasteboard.
I claim as my invention* A combined playing-card package and cribbage-board, comprising two box members arranged to slide or telescope together, the vtop of the outer member and the bottom of the inner or telescoping member being provided with perforations and lines to form a Cribbage-board and each of said members being provided with an aperture on one of its vertical sides, the said apertures being on opposite sides of the card package when the two box members are in normal position, but on the same side and arranged to register lCO With each other when the inner box member In testimony that'l claim the foregoing I is inverted and extended to form a oribbagohave hereunto set my hand in the presence ol board, and a detachable peg adapted to be two subscribing witnesses.
inserted in said apertures when in'register LORENZO O. GRANGER. with each other to hold the two box members lVitnesses:
in extended position, substantially as set EDWARD E. OsBoRN,
forth and described. E. L. GAY.
