Specification of Letters Patent.

To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, LEVI B. MYERS, a citi- Zen of the United `States of America, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and btate of lfennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Envelope, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in envelops; and the invention has for its primary object to provide a novel form of envelop which when once sealed cannot be surreptitiously opened.
Another object of this invention is to provide an envelop constructed from a single sheet of paper that can be easily and quickly folded and sealed to form an inclosure free from all danger of being opened without detection, the envelop being particularly adapted for transmitting valuable papers and letters through the mails.
A further object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive envelop that may also be used as a letter or circular for transmission through the mails as secondclass matter.
With the above and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction to be hereinafter described and claimed, and referring to the drawing accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is developed view of my improved envelop. Fig. 2 is a plan of the envelop partly folded. Fig. 3 is a plan of the envelop in a folded position. Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating the reverse or front side of the envelop. Fig. 5 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of my improved envelop in folded position. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan of a portion of the envelop', illustrating a postage-stamp partly secured thereon; and Fig. 7 is a fragmentary plan of a portion of the sealing-flap of the envelop, illustrating the front side thereof.
To put my invention into practice, I construct my improved envelop of a sheet of paer which is cut to form a body portion or iront wall 1, having a bottom flap 2, a top flap 3, a side or rear iiap 4, and a sealing-flap 5. The body portion or front wall of the envelop is substantially rectangular in plan and in its upper left-hand corner is provided with a rectangular opening 6. rI'he bottom flap 2 is adapted to fold upon the body portion or front wall l, and the top flap 3 is folded upon the bottom flap 2 and secured thereon by adhesive material 7, carried by the upper edge of the top flap 3. The top and bottom edges of the side or rear wall 4 are provided with adhesive material 8 8, which. is moistened, whereby the side or rear wall 4 can be secured upon the top and bottom flaps 3 and 2. The top and bottom edges, also the outer edge lof the sealing-flap, are provided with adhesive material 9, and the upper' left-hand corner of the sealing-flap is provided with a plurality of slits or openings 10, the object of which will be presently described.
After the side or rear wall 4 sealedupon the top and bottom flaps 3 and 2 the adhesive material 9 of the sealing-flap 5 is moistened and said flap inserted in the end of the envelop between the body ortion l and the top and bottom flaps 3 an 2. The front side of the sealing-flap 5 is provided with adhesive material 11, which is also moistened, whereby when the sealing-flap has been inserted in the end of the envelop the edge of the body portion i can be pressed ihto engagement with the adhesive material l1 to close the end of the envelop. rIhe position of the sealing-flap 5 within the end of the envelop causes the slits or openings 10 to lie directly beneath the opening 6 of the body portion l, and when the postage-stamp 12 is placed upon the envelop the stamp is placed over the open'ng 6, whereby a portion of the stamp will engage the slitted portion of the sealing-flap 5. By vsecuring the postagestamp over the opening 6 to engage the sealing-flap 5 it will be impossible to open the envelop without destroying the stamp thereof, and when the front side or edge of thesealing-flap has been secured in engagement with the front wall l of the envelop it will be impossible to tamper with the adhesive material 9 and 7 of the flaps 5 and 3, respectively.
When it is desired to use my improved envelops as second-class matter in the mails, the sealing-flap 5 are simply inserted within the ends of the envelop without being moistened, and the placing of a postage-stam p upon the envelop is adapted to temporarily hold the sealing-flap within the envelop, but in such a position as the contents of the envelop has been- IOO IIO
can be seen andy inspected at any time from the end of the envelop.
I do not care to confine myself to he character of paper from which the envelop is made or to the size or proportion thereof, and such changes as are permissible by the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. j
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. An envelop consisting of a body and integral top and bottom fla s foldable over each other and over said bo y and an integral end flap foldable' over the top and bottom iaps and with an integral sealing-Hap at the free end of the end flap and adapted to be inserted between the body and the top and bottom flaps, said body portion having a perforation at the end opposite from the end vHap and said sealing-flap having a plurality of spaced slits, whereby when the envelop is folded thev sealing-flap will project beneath said perforations and with said slitted-portion thereof in position to be engaged by a postage-stamp when attached over said perforation.
2.
