Description

"is dini Jewesteem To ai! whom it may co-nce'm:
Be it known that I, E. M. CHUMARD, of Pittston, inthe county of Luzerne, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brakes for Vehicles; and dohereby declare that the 'following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon. .v
In the annexed drawing, making a part of this specication, A A represent wheels, Aand B B represent hounds of a wagon.
G represents a brake-bar, made of suitable length to extend just outside of the wheels A A, and is secured to the hounds B B, as is fully shown.
D represents a metallic rod of suitable, dimensions, and just long enough to come out even with the centre of the trank of the wheels A A, and is adjusted in suitable bearings alongside of the brake-bar G, and parallel therewith.
The metallic rod D is provided with lugs or ears x x, or has them secured to it in any suitable manner, and has alever, K, secured to it for the purpose of partially turning or revolving `said rod.
I I represent brake-blocks, adjusted between the brake-bar C and the wheels A A, by means of links or loops .hy h and rods g g.
The links or loops h h passthroughI the upper end of the brake-blocks I I, and are pivoted or hinged to the bar C on its under side.
The rods g g are pivoted to the lugs a: a: of the rod D, and to the lower end of the brake-'block I, and operate the same baekward and forward.
m represents a metallic slotted guide secured to the under side of the bar'O, the rod g passing through the slot thereof.
v The slotted guide m holds the rod q from lateral;
strains, and'keeps it rmly in its position when working backward and forward.
l represents a spiral spring, adjusted around the rod D for the purpose of throwing it back, and thereby the brake-blocks I I, when the lever K is relieved of the pressure applied to it.
It will readilybe seen that the rod D with its lugs a: x, being turned by means of the lever- K', the brakeblocks I I are thrown back against the wheels A A., by means'of the rods g g and links or loops h h. It will also be lseen that the top and bottcmof said blocks are thrown outso as to'wear fairly on their faces, and that when brought back by means of thesprin'g l, they are firmly held against the brake-bar O, so that there will be no rattling or chance of getting loose.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let l ters Patent, is
The arrangement of the crank-shaft D, rods g g, arms x slotted guides m, loops h h, and brake-blocks I, with the brake-bar C, and operated by the lever K and spring l, all constructed substantially as set forth. v In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 25th day of March, 1868.
