To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. LYoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Silver City, in the county of Grant and Territory of New Mexico, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Closures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bottle-closures, and has for its objects to provide a simple inexpensive means for sealing the stopper Within the neck of a bottle whereby after the bottle has been initially filled and sealed unauthorized removal of the stopper is prevented, thus obviating the fraudulent substitution of an inferior grade of goods for that initially contained in the bottle.

With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section centrally through the neck of a bottle equipped with a closure embodying the invention Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a bottle-neck of suitable construction and material and having an inner marginal bearingshoulder 2 formed at a point suitably remote from the outer end of the neck, the wall of which is of reduced thickness to present a highly-frangible portion 3 at a point adjacent the shoulder 2. Seated in the neck 1 and having its upper end flush with the shoulder 2 is a cork or other stopper 3, having arranged thereover and to rest upon the shoulder a separating piece or disk 5, preferably composed of cardboard. Disposed within the upper portion of the neck above the disk 5 is a sealing member or stopper 6, comprising a substantially conical body portion or stem 7, provided at its upper end with a fiat disk-like head 8, presenting a marginal flange adapted to seat upon the upper end of the neck and at its lower end with a substan tially semispherical head 9, which bears upon the upper face of the disk 5, there being filled into the upper portion of the neck and for fixing the member 6 therein a filling 10 of cement, plaster-of-paris, or the like, which is introducedin a plastic state and upon hardening binds the sealing member in place.

In practice after the bottle has been filled and the cork 4 introduced the sealing member 6is arranged in place over the cork and the neck filled around the sealing member with the binding material 10, the disk 5 having been previously introduced between the head 9 and stopper 4. When it is desired to remove the contents of the bottle, the upper portion of the neck is broken off at the frangible point 3, thus to permit ready removal of the stopper 4, it being apparent that withdrawal of the stopper and consequent removal of the contents of the bottle is wholly obviated except by breaking the neck, thus insuring a ready detection of fraudulent refilling of the It is to be particularly observed that the head 9 is of a size substantially equaling the size of the separating-disk 5 and that the latter and head consequently have bearing upon the shoulder 2.

From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a comparatively simple device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view, it being understood that in attaining these ends minor changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim is A bottle-neck having an inner shoulder disposed at a point remote from the outer end of the neck, a stopper seated in the latter below and having its upper end flush with the shoulder, a separating-disk arranged in the neck to rest on the shoulder and upper end of the stopper, a sealing-stopper disposed above the separating-disk, said sealing-stopper comprising a substantially conical body portion provided at its lower end with a head designed to seat upon the disk and at its upper end with a projecting flange to bear on the upper end of the neck, and a cement filling surrounding the sealing member within the neck.
