IMPROVBD WINDOW-STRIP ATTACHMENT.

To ALL WHOM IT MAY OONGERN;
Be it known that I, WINTHROP WARD, of Mystic Bridge, in the county of New London, and State ofConnecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Attaching Window-Strips or Beads; and
I do hereby declavc the followingto bea full, clean-and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is made a part of this specification. l
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and secure fastening, which shall readily admit of the strips or beads, which are attached by means of it, being removed and attached, for the purpose of ,withdrawing and inserting the sash, without the aid o f tools.
My improved fastening consists of a spring-expanding stud or pin, attached to the strip, and engaging with a tubular socket inserted in thevframe. v
In the drawing t Figure l is a perspective view of a window-frame provided with my improved fasteniugs, a portion of the lframe and one of the fastenings being broken away, to more'fully represent the mode of applying the device.
Figure Zis a perspective view, on an enlarged scale, of the two parts ofthe fastening, in a separated posi'- tion, a portion of a strip being shown iu connection with one of the parts, to illustrate the mannerof applying it thereto. v
A represents the frame proper, which, for the reception of my invention, is provided, instead of the customary vertical vgronvesfor the reception of the beads-,\vith corresponding series-ofholes, d, a, of twoorm'ore each, as may be necessary, for the size and nature of the window in which used. In said holes are inserted, preferably by driving, tubular metallic sockets, B, of round or other curvilinear form in cross-section, which may be flush with the surface of the frame on each side, and which are intended for the reception of a springstud or pin, C, attached to the strips or beads D DI, by which the sashes E E are held in vposition.`
l The strips D Dl are provided for thereception ofthe studs or pins C with suitable perforations d cl, matching with the ones, a a', in the frame, and which receive the screw-threaded or otherwise suitably-provided shank e of said pins, as represented igfZ. By, leaving the outer ends of 'the stud a little below the surfacefand puttying and painting over it, a perfectly smooth and even surface may be produced, the presence of any fastening not being discernible.
The outer strip, D2, is preferably secured in the ordinary manner, as its temporary removal is generally never required. It may, however, be also provided Withthe fastening, in a similar manner to the other strips, ,f
when desired. The strips on one side of the window, and the top and bottom, may also be left unprovided, or be provided therewith, as preferred.
Thobit or head of the pin C is provided with a rounded or tapering entering-point, c2, and is slitted or divided, as represented at c2, and expanded to 'a suiieient extent to 'cause it, when inserted in the socket B, to hold with suiicient tenacity to prevent the accidental displacement of the strip. v
The separate parts of my invention may be made of brass, iron, or other suitable metal, in any of the usual modes. l
The socket B may, when round, in cross-section, if preferred, be provided with an external screw-thread, to render its attachment in the frame vmore secure. I also propose slitting the front end thereof, and compressing it, so aste form a contracted entrance, more or less elastic, for' the spring-pin, or providing it with said contracted end in any other suitable4 manner.
My improved fasteningl may be'readilyiapplied .to a frame, by any person, withouty the aid of professional assistance, is cheap and durable, and not at -all liable to become accidentally detached from the parts to which applied, or to otherwvi'se get out of order. l v
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent- 'Ihe provision, una window-strip, of spring-pins, adapted to slip into tubular sockets in thevwindow-frame, forl the purpose of atta'eliing'said strip, substantially as described and represented.
'lo the above specification of my invention I have 'signed my hand, this twenty-seventh day of duly, 1868.
' WINTHROP WARD.
