SEAIVI FOR SEWED ARTICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1906.
Application filed June 3, 1904. Serial No. 211,061.
To aZZ whom it natty concern.-
Be it known that I, LANSING ONDERDONK, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, .State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seams for Sewed Artlcles, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in seams for sewed articles, and particularly to a seam of great strength or arrangement of threads and fabric adapted for finishing the edges of fabrics or for covering and uniting the raw edges of two pieces of fabric which may be afterward spread out flat.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and referred to in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a sectional perspective view of a seam embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View of the same and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are views similar to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, respectively, of a modification.
In the drawings, referring first to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, A A represent two pieces of fabric whose edges are superposed. Two upper threads are used which have loops a a formed in them and passed down through the fabric substantially one behind the other, but on the under surface approach each other, forming the two sides of a trian le, so that a third thread I) may pass through both loops and may pass up over the edge and lie on the upper surface of the fabric and, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, may pass around a loop in the thread a, and the thread a between its loops will lie across the loop in thread I).
In Figs. 4, 5, and 6 a modification is shown in which the loop of thread I) surrounds loop a, while it passes over the thread a between its loops.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A seam for sewed articles, comprising a body fabric, threads having loops passed alternately therethrough at points substantially one behind the other, a locking-thread passing through each pair of said loops, and lying over the edge, and surrounding one or the other of said threads on the upper surface of said fabric; substantially as described.
2. A seam for sewed articles, comprising a body fabric, threads having loops passed alternately therethrough at points substantially one behind the other, but lying on the under surface of the fabric, diagonal to each other and with their points together, a third thread passing through both loops at their point of meeting, and lying over the edge, and surrounding one or the other of the threads upon the upper surface of the fabric; substantially as described.
3. A seam for sewed articles, comprising a body fabric, threads having loops passed alternately therethrough at points substantially one behind the other, a locking-thread passing through each of said loops and lying over the edge and passing under one row of loops on the upper surface of the fabric, and. surrounding one of said threads on the upper surface of the fabric; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LANSING ONDERDONK. Witnesses:
W. L. SWIFT, E. T. ALLAN.
