To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LOUIS SGHMITT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ornamental l Lamp-Shade, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in lamp-shades, and more particularly to shades of an ornamental character.

The object of my invention is to produce a shade which. can be given a highly-artistic effect by having its outer surface of ornamental open-work metal and by having this sur face interiorly covered with a sheet of colored silk or other fabric, the said fabric being protected by an inner coating of mica or other refractory transparent or translucent substance. By making a shade in this way I can give to its outer surface an effect as of oxidized silver or copper or other ornamental effect, can make it up in various open designs, and when the light colored by the fabric shines out through the openings of the shade body the effect is very pleasing. Moreover, a shade of this kind is substantial and serves perfectly the ordinary shadepurposes of protecting the eyes.

Another object of my invention is to produce a shade of this character in such a manner that it can be conveniently and securely put together:

With these ends in view my invention consists of an ornamental lamp-shade the construction and arrangement of which will be hereinafter described and the novel features claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the shade embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.

The shade is made, preferably, in the conventional shapethat is, like the frustum of a coneand its outer surface or body 10 is of metal, which is preferably, though not necessarily, a flexible metal and which has numerous openings therein, and such openings 1 can be cut or produced in a way to make many different designs. The inner portion of the shade is formed, preferably, of relatively narrow panels 11 of mica, though other refractory light permeable material can be used without affecting the principle of the invention. Between the refractory lining and the outer body 10 is placed a layer 12 of colored material through which the light passes, as above described. This material is preferably a sheet or strip of silk, though obviously it may be any other suitable substance which can be given the desired color.

In assembling the parts the coloring material 12 is laid over the outer body 10, the panels 11 put in place, and the ends of the panels are fastened by doubling over or crimping the upper and lower edges of the part 10, as shown at 13, so that the ends of the panels are held securely in place. The inner surface of the shade may, however, be made in any suitable way and fastened in any convenient manner so long as it has the necessary heatresisting and light-permeable qualities. The body 10 may also be shaped up in the most convenient manner, and in practice it is better to have the material pliable, as described, and it can then be cut to shape and simply curled up and fastened in the most convenient way.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A lamp-shade comprising an outer portion of open metal work, an inner portion of lightpermeable heat-resisting material, and a lining of coloring material between the inner and outer parts, the said outer part being wider than the inner portion and the lining, the said outer part having its upper and lower marginal portions bent inwardly to embrace the edges of the inner portion and the lining, and acting as a clamp to confine the said inner portion and lining.
