The distinguishing objects of the presentinvention are to provide for dispensing with the customary threading operation in a peculiar manner and at the same time forreadily inclosing one or both ends of the Wire or cord, hereinafter termed the shackle, preliminary to the pressing operation; to so inclose the same as to utilize the entire width of the seal part for anchoring the same within the lead at the pressing operation, and to so construct the inclosing means as to insure its obliteration at the pressing operation and to free the pressed sealing part from any open edges into which a tool might be inserted for tampering with the seal.
The invention consists in certain novel combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
A sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved seal as it leaves the factory. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same ready for the sealpress. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the pressed seal. Figs. 4:, 5, and 6 are sections on the lines A, B, andO, respectively. Figs. 7 and 8 are:side views of unpressed seals, illustrating modifications; and Fig. 9 is an edge view of an improved seal part ready for the seal-press, showing both shackle ends within the seal part in cross-section.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in all the figures.
The improved seal in each of its forms or species consists of a compressible seal part a or a or a or a and a flexible shackle b or b or b or Z), that are or may be united at one end of the shackle at the factory, the seal part, in which the novelty of the invention resides, having a peculiar open-mouth shape, which adapts it to receive the loose shackle end or both shackle ends, if desired, preliminary to the pressing operation by a convenient lateral movement instead of a threading operation. To this end the seal part a or (a? or a or (0* is constructed with upper and lower jaws 1 and 2, integral with the respective longitudinal edges of a sleeve portion 3 or 3, open at one side, which is. in turn integral with a solid edge 1, as it may be termed. One of the shackle ends may be preliminarily secured withinthis solid edge parallel with said sleeve portion 3, as shown at 5 in Figs. 1, 2, 4c, 5, 7, and 8, .or the seal part (0* may be wholly detached from the shackle If until it is applied to both shackle ends preliminary to the pressing operation, as illustrated by Fig. 9. The seal part is closed upon the loose. shackle end 6 or upon both ends, as in Figs. 2 and 5 and Fig. 9, preparatory to the pressing operation, the upper jaw 1 being easily pliable for this purpose. The upper jaw 1 is preferably smaller than the lower jaw 2, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8, and the-improved seal is preferably pressed into what is termed a helmet shape. (Represented in Figs. 3 and 6.) When the seal is pressed in this manner or in an equivalent manner, the relatively small upper jaw 1 whollydisappears at the pressing operation, or, in other words, is obliterated by the sealpress, so that the pressed seal is free from any cracks in which a tool might be inserted for the purpose of tampering with the shackle. The seal part a or (t or a or a may be provided at the pressing operation with any desired press-marks, as represented by B in Fig. 3. Said sleeve portion 3 or 3 conveniently extends from edgeto edge of the seal part, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 7, and 8, and thus incloses as much as practicable of the loose shackle end or shackle ends within the same, so as to anchor the same within the pressed lead to the utmost extent.
Apart from the features of construction above mentioned the shape and appearance of the seal part (6 or a or a or cf may be considerably varied by changes in the shape of the respective jaws 1 and 2 and of the solid edge 1, as illustrated by Figs. 7 and 8, in comparison with Figs. 1 and 2, or of the sleeve portion as represented at 3 in Fig. 9 in comparison with the sleeve portion 3 as shown in Figs. 2 and 5.
In the improved seals represented by Figs. 7 and 8 the seal parts a and a are or may be identical with the seal part (0, (shown in Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive,) except as to such changes in the shapes of the parts.
The seal part (4*, (shown in Fig. 9,) apart from its said sleeve portion 3, may be of any of the shapes represented by Figs. 1 and 4 and Figs. 2 and 5 or Fig. 7 or Fig. 8 or of any equivalent shape adapting the improved seal part to be applied to the shackle ends in the manner above set forth.
It has already been pointed out that the shackle may be either of flexible wire or suitable cord. If of a single wire, as represented atband 6 either or both of the shackle ends may be crimped or provided with other anchoring means, as represented at 7 in Fig. 7. The wire may be of two or more strands, as shown at 6 in Fig. 8, if preferred, to increase its resistance against withdrawal in another customary way, or it may be of cord or twine, as represented at b in Fig. 9, and other like modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described said improvement, I claim as my invention, and desire to patent under this specification 1. In combination with a flexible shackle of wire or the like, a compressible seal part having a pair of jaws integral with the respective longitudinal edges of a sleeve portion open at one side, the jaws being normally open, and the upper jaw being pliable to provide for inserting one or both shackle ends sidewise into said sleeve portion and confining the same therein preliminary to the pressing operation.
2. In combination with a flexible shackle of wire or the like, a compressible seal part having a pair of jaws integral with the respective longitudinal edges of a sleeve portion open at one side, the jaws being normally open and the upper jaw being pliable to provide for inserting one or both shackle ends sidewise into said sleeve portion and confining the same therein preliminary to the pressing operation, and a solid edge portion at the'closed side of said sleeve portion and integral therewith.
3. In combination with a flexible shackle of wire or the like, a compressible seal part having a pair of jaws integral with the respective longitudinal edges of a sleeve portion open at one side, the jaws being normally open and the upper jaw being pliable to provide for inserting one or both shackle ends sidewise into said sleeve portion and confining the same therein preliminary to the pressing operation, and said upper jaw being smaller than the lower jaw and adapted to be obliterated at the pressing operation.
4. In combination with a flexible shackle of wire or the like, a compressible seal part having a pair of jaws integral with the respective longitudinal edges of a sleeve portion open at one side, the jaws being normally open and the upper jaw being pliable to provide for inserting one of the shackle ends sidewise into said sleeve portion and confining the same therein preliminary to the pressing operation, and a solid edge portion at the closed side of said sleeve portion and integral therewith, one end of said shackle being made fast in said solid edge parallel with said sleeve portion to preliminarily unite the parts, substantially as hereinbefore specified.
