ELECTRIC TARGET-SETTING APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, (jrUsTAv GRABosoH, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Berlin, Neue Jakobstrasse 12, Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in or Relating to Electric Target-Setting Apparatus;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a target-setting apparatus which can be electrically operated by the shooter from a distance. It relates, therefore, to a device by means of which the target-say awooden figure of a soldiercan be turned about a central axis to the extent of ninety degrees, so that the target can be brought into avertical or horizontal position in front of the shooter. Unlike Well-known apparatus of this kind which are driven by an electric motor the target-setting device according to this invention is operated by an electromagnet with tWo coils, the reciprocating core of which produces angular movement of the target by means of suitable gearing or connections. 1
Two constructions of an apparatus according to this invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which* Figure 1 is a side elevation in section, and Fig. 2 a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan with the casing in section and showing the target and the electric connection of one construction, and Fig. 1 is a side elevation in section of another construction of the setting device.
The casing 4 of the electromagnet, preferably made of iron, contains an adjustable core 5, adapted to be alternately drawn to the right and to the left hand side by the coils 6 and 7. A guide-rod 8 transmits this movement through a cross-head 9 and connecting- rods 10 and 11 to cranks 12 and 15, rotatable about a shaft 16, the said cranks converting the rectilinear movement of the core 5 into an angu- The second position of the angular movement is shown 1n Flg. 2.
The setting device is supported on feet or brackets 14: and 15. By means of a sleeve 17, attached to the target and arranged on the shaft or pin 16, the angular movement of the cranks 12 and 13 is utilized for vertical or horizontal setting or for making the target 3 visible or invisible.
At the place where the shooter stands is arranged a small electric battery 2, with a switch 1 and three contact-studs. One contact is connected by a wire with one coil and the second contact by a wire 21 with the second coil. The common return 22 of the two coils is connected to the negative pole of the battery. In the central position of the switch 1 (shown in Fig. 3) both coils 6 and 7 are disconnected. If the switch is moved onto one contact, the core 5 will be pulled to one side and the target will, say, become visible. If the switch ,is moved to the other contact, the core will be pulled in the other direction and the target will again disappear.
The construction shown in Fig. 4 differs from that shown in Fig. 3 by a hydraulic or liquid regulation of the working of the target, which at the same time serves to lock the core. The two halves 23 of the casing 4, separated bya partition, are lilled with some liquid, preferably oil. They are connected with each other by a pipe 18, arranged under the electromagnetsay between the feet 14 and 15. A tap or valve 19 in this pipe 18 is adjusted for regulating the speed of the setting movement in such manner that the movements of the iron core, and therefore the movements of the target, are correspondingly controlled and all shocks are avoided when the current is switched on. This tap 19 is operated by an electromagnet 24, to the iron core 25 of which it is connected by pivoted rods 26. The electromagnet 24: is arranged in the same circuit as the magnet- coils 6 and 7 either in parallel or in series with them. Every time the circuit is closed this electromagnet opens, therefore, the tap 19, so that the iron core 5, the coils of which are excited by the same closing of circuit, can move, since the liquid can circulate. When there is no current in the electromagnet, the latter keeps the tap 19 closed, so that the iron core remains locked in its position, an accidental turning of the target thus being prevented.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is
1. In a target-setting apparatus, an electromagnet, a core slidable therein, and a target shiftable directly by said core.
2. An electromagnet, acoreshiftable therein, and a target shiftable in either of two directions by said core.
3. An electromagnet, a core slidable therein, and a target partially rotatable by said core.
4:. An electromagnet, a target, and means for transmitting oscillatory motion to the latter from the former.
5. An electromagnet, acore slidable therein, a target, and means for converting the reciprocatory movement of said core into an oscillatory movement and transmitting the latter to said target.
6. In atarget-setting apparatus, an electromagnet, a core slidable therein, a spindle, a target mounted thereon, and means connecting said spindle and core whereby the former is partially rotated upon the actuation of said electromagnet.
7. In a target-setting apparatus, an electromagnet, a core slidable therein, a spindle, a target mounted on said spindle, a guide-rod carried by said core, a cross-head fixed to said guide-rod, cranks attached to said spindle, and connecting-rods connecting said cranks with said cross-head.
8. In a target-setting aparatus, an electro magnet, a core slidable therein, a spindle extending transversely through said electromagnet, cranks applied to said spindle at either side of said electromagnet, a reciprocatory cross-head operable by said core, connecting-rods connecting said cross-head with said cranks, and a target mounted on said spindle.
9. A target-setting apparatus including an electromagnet having two coils, a core movable in opposite directions by said coils when the same are energized, a shiftable target, and aconnection between said target and said core.
10. A target-setting apparatus including an electromagnet having two coils arranged side by side, a core movable through said coils, a circuit for each of said coils, means for independently closing and opening each circuit,
and a target in operative connection with said core.
11. An electromagnet, a target shi't'table thereby, and hydraulic means in connection with said electromagnet for locking the target in position.
12. An electromagnet embodying acasing, a liquid contained in said casing, a core slidable in the electromagnet and movable through said liquid, a target shiftable by said core, and means for regulating the flow of said liquid from one part of said casing to another part thereof.
13. An electromagnet comprising a casing to contain a liquid, a core for said electromagnet movable in such liquid, a target shiltable by said core, a pipe connected at each end with said casing, and a valve in said pipe.
1&. In a target-setting apparatus, a target, means for shifting the same, a hydraulic cushioning and locking means, and electrical means for controlling the latter.
15. In a targetsetting apparatus, a target, a device for shifting the same, a hydraulic stop device including a valve, and electrical means for operating said valve.
16. In a target-setting apparatus, a target, a device for shifting the same, a hydraulic cushioning device for the target including a valve, and an electromagnetthe core of which is connected to said valve.
17. In a target-setting apparatus, a target, an electrical device for shifting the same, a stop device, and electrical means included in the circuit of said first device for operating said stop device.
18. In a target-setting apparatus, in combination, a target, an electromagnet for shifting the same, a circuit in which said electromagnet is included, means for locking said target against movement, and an electromagnet for actuating said lochingmeans included in the circuit of said first electromagnet.
