E. O. HENDERSON AND It. A. HENDERSON, OF ALBIA, IOWA.
Letters Patent No. 80,954, dated August 11, 1868.
IMPROVBD MILLSTONE-MAHINE.
TO ALL WI-IOM IT MAY CONOERN:
r Be it known that we,-E. C. HENDERSON and R. A. HENDERSON, of A1bia,in the county of Monroe, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and improved Millstonc-Dressing Machine; and we do hereby declare, that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, -which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a sectional elevation of our invention, the section being taken through the line :c :v of fig. 2.
Figure 2 is a top view of the machine.
Figure 3 is a detail end view ofthe lever-head and picking-plates.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
`The object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective machine forgdressing millstones in a uniform' and expeditionsmanner, whereby the operation of cutting the furrows in the stone can be performed by a person not necessarily skilled in using the hand-pick for the same' purpose. v l Y It consists of a pick, operated by a train of mechanism, the motion of which is produced by simply turning a hand-crank In the accompanying drawings- A is the general frame of the machine.
B are bearing-blocks, which aiford bearings'for the shafts C D of the mechanism operating the pick-lever E.
These blocks slide to and fro in grooves, a, in the frame of the machine, and are held within said grooves by the strap-plates G, one of which is broken away in iig. 2, to exhibit the bearing-block B beneath it,
When the crank Il is turned, the blocks I3, and the entire piek-mechanism which they4 support, are moved forward or backward by nneansoil the pinions I on the shaft C, which pinions engage with the racks J, ailixed in suitable positions to the frame A, as shown. i
Motion is communicated to the shaft D from the shaft C, by means of engaging cog-wheels K and-L, keyed on their respectivo shafts, as shown, the wheel L being aurelativclysmall wheel or pinion, so that the shaft D will be revolved much faster than the shaft C, for `t-he purpose of actuating the pick-lever E to vibrate rapidly, as it progresses, horizontally, and thus strikethe picking-plates M upon the stone in a close succession oi' places. Y v
The vibration of the lever is accomplished by a cam or eccentric, O, keyed on the shaft D, the said eccentric revolving within an elongated eye, l?, forming part of the lever, which, as onc end of the-said lever is pivoted on the shaft C as a centre, causes theY picking-plates M heldin the lever-head Q to impinge upon the i face of the stone in a rapid and regular manner.
In operation, the machine is laid upon the face of thc stone in thc proper direction for cutting the required furrow.
The crank-handle is then turned alternately in reverse directions, which operation moves the lever back and forth in thelsarnc line, and at the saine time causes it to vibrate, thus inilicting a series of blows with the picking-plates, whereby the face of the stone is dressed in the manner required. v
The head Q is formed with aldeep rectangular clove orslot, and provided with set-screws, b, for holding any required number of picking-plates, so that furrows of diierentwidths may be cut by the same machine, when desired. y
This form of the head is shown at fig. 3.
We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The sliding bearing-blocks B, operated by means of the rack and pinion I J, for giving to the pick of a milIstone-dressing machine a horizontal motion, substantially as shown and described. I
2. The shafts C D, connected by gearing K L,'and provided with the pinions lI and eccentric, O, when said shafts have their berings in he sliding vblocks B, and are arranged, with relation to the rack J and frame A,
substantially as herein described.
3. The pick-lever E, when fitted at one end to turn upon the shaft C, und formed with an elongated eye, P, adapted to receive the eccentric, O, on shaft D, ysaid lever being arranged to be operated both vertically and horizontally within the frm'e A, in the manner and by the nieans herein shown 'and described.
