Application filed April 23, 1904- Serial No, 2041 To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNIGE J. NoYEs, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Bunsen Burners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to Bunsen burners, and has for its object to provide a specific form of Bunsen burner of the Welsbach type having adjustable gas-orifices with an adjustable air-shutter whereby the dimensions of the air-inlets may be varied.
The particular burner to which my invention is applied comprises, essentially, a tube having a plurality of side openings near its lower end adapted to receive upon it a support for the mantle and a support for the globe, a thimble contained in said tube having its top formed to constitute a diaphragm which is provided with a plurality of gasorifices, said diaphragm being located in a plane with the side openings, an occludingplate mounted on said diaphragm adapted to open the gas-orifices more or less, a revoluble actuating member for said occluding-plate adapted to be placed on said tube and con-' sisting of a conical body having an engaging portion for the occluding-plate and also having a perforated plate fixed to its lower end, through the perforations of which the air passes.
The air-shutter embodying my invention consists of an independently-movable perforated plate disposed in juxtaposition to the perforated plate which is fixed to the revoluble actuating member for the occluding-plate, said movable perforated plate having a projecting finger-piece or other means whereby it is moved independently of the fixed plate.
Figure 1 shows in side elevation a Bunsen burner embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section of a portion of the burner. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the burner, taken on the dotted line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an under-side view of the revoluble actuating member for the occluding-plate. Fig. 5 is a plan View of the perforated plate which is located in juxtaposition to the perforated plate of the revoluble actuating member and which is movable independently thereof. Fig. 6 is a detail to be referred to.
a represents a nipple having a threaded hole to receive the threaded end of the fixture and also having a threaded recess to receive the tube a, which is provided with a plurality of side openings a disposed in the same plane just above the top of the nipple a. The tube a receives upon it a tube Z), which bears a globe-support Z) and also receives upon it the usual mantle. A thimble c is contained in the tube a, the upper end of which is formed as a fiat diaphragm c, and said diaphragm is provided with a plurality of gasorifices 0 which are arranged in any suitable manner.
Upon the diaphragm c an occluding-plate c is placed, which is pivoted to said diaphragm to be revolved thereon to open the gas-orifices more or less. The occluding-plate has holes 0 through it, which are brought into aposition above the gas-orifices 0 The occluding-plate has a lug extended laterally from it, which is engaged by a revoluble actuating member for turning the plate. The revoluble actuating member consists of a conical body (Z, having a perforated plate 03 fixed to its lower end and having an engaging portion for the lug 0 consisting of a pair of vertical bars 01 extending from the fixed plate cl to the top of the conical body, said bars receiving the lug 0 between them. The revoluble actuating member has a circular hole through it, whereby it is adapted to be placed upon and to quite snugly fit the lower part of the tube a. The fixed perforated plate d has an entrance-slot d for the lug 0 opposite the space between the bars 0Z so that the revoluble actuating member may be placed upon the tube a and the lug 0 caused to occupy a position between the vertical bars (Z 6 represents a circular perforated plate, which is herein shown as contained within the revoluble actuating member and is placed upon the fixed perforated plate 0?. The plate 6 is held in place on the plate (2 by overturning a lip d on the fixed plate, or it may be otherwise held in place. The plate 0 is movable independently of the fixed plate d, .so that the perforations thereof may be brought into position to register with the perforations of said fixed plate (Z, more or less, as desired, to thereby vary the size of the openings through which the air passes. The plate 0 has a downwardly-extended lug e, which passes through a hole in the fixed plate d-as, for instance, one of the air-holesso as to be easily accessible, and by engaging said lug and exerting suitable pressure thereon the plate 6 will be turned; yet it will be understood that the revoluble actuating member is also free to be turned to move the occluding plate. The plate 6 has a slot 6 which may be moved into position to register with the slot (Z to provide for the passage of the lug 0 when the revoluble actuating member is placed upon the tube a.
I am aware that .the occluding-plate and means for moving it, as herein shown, are not new,and, furthermore, I am aware that burners of the W'elsbach type have been provided with adjustable air-shutters.
