the State o f Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foldable Metallic Cases, of which the following is a specilication.

This invention' .relates to metallic jcases'or boxes for burial purposes.

One object of the invention -is to provide an improved metal case to loev placed inthe grave for the reception of the casket containing the body and to construct said cases so that they may be folded for convenience in storage and shipping.v t

The invention is illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 illustates a perspective view of the case ready for use. Fig. 2 illustrates the case in the folded condition. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the case. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section lof the case with the cover removed. Fig. 5 isa vertical longitudinal section of the folded case and cover. Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section vof the same. Fig.'

7 is a sectional view of the case and cover invidedwith a curled-over upper edge also to form a stationary coil 5 at each end. The end coils, as clearly seen in Figs. 3 and 4, are in a plane slightly below that of the side The bottom of the receptacle is also provided with longitudinal ribs 6, which extend upwardly on .thev inside and'serve to strengthen said bottom in a lengthwise direction. This bottom receptacle, including the ribs and coils in the present instance, is formed from a single plate; but it is obvious that it may be formed from a series'of plates.

Each of the movable side walls 7 .is provided along its bottom edge with a fold- 8, vwhichis formed by bending the metal backward, and' from said back bend the said edge is curled,

so as tol form a tube-like coil 9, which takes around the stationary coil 4 on the stationary` .side wall of the bottom. These/side walls are also formed, preferably, from a single plate and are provided with horizontal inwardlyextending ribs 10 for the purpose of stifening and' strengthening the'wall. The'upper edges of the side walls are turned inwardly and downwardly. to form a stiff channel structure 11 at said edge for the cover to rest upon. vertically-extending tapered plates 12 are'riveted to the side wall, and these plates extend from the channel structure, where they are narrowest, to the coil 9 at the-bottom edge of the side wall. These tapered plates not only serve to strengthen the wall in a vertical direction, but they also serve to guide the casket when lowered into the case, so as to prevent it from striking on the horizontal ribs 10 and the coil 9.

The construction of the movable end walls 13 is exactly a duplicate of that of the Yside walls, except that the tubular coil 14, which curls around the stationary coil 5, has position in alower plane than the coil on the side walls, and the guide-plates 15 are slightly longer than those on the side walls.

The cover 16 may have any desired panel or curved formation in its top plate, but the sides 17 and ends 18 turn down, so as to take over the channel Ystructure 11 of the side walls when the latter are in the vertical position'.

An opening may be provided in the cover for the reception of `the end of a tube 19,

through which cement may be poured, so as l to lill the case around the casket after the grave is filled. This concrete filling, however,

may be placed in the case around the casket before the cover is placed thereon and prior to the filling of the grave, theobject being to provide a filling that will set and harden around the casket, so that the latter will be embedded in concrete and form a waterproof monolithic mass.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a foldable metallic case the combination with the bottom having upwardly-projecting side and end walls of different heights, and movable walls pivotally connected to the stationary walls of the bottom whereby the movable walls may be folded one upon the other over the bottom, and a cover.

2. In a fol'dable metallic case the combination with the bottom having Vstationary side walls provided with a curled upper edge and end walls also having curled upper edges which are in a plane below the curled edges of the side walls, and movable walls whose lower edges are also curled and engaged with the coils on the stationary side and end walls whereby the movable walls may be folded down over the bottom.

3. In a foldable metallic case the combination with the bottom whose walls are provided with curls along its edges, of movable walls also having curls along their lower edges which engage the curls on the walls of the bottom and said movable walls also having guide-plates extending in a direction at right angles to the curled edges.
