BINDER FOR LOOSE LEAVES OF BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,389, dated June 13, 1905.
Application filed February 4, 1905. Serial No. 244,229.

Be it known that I, JACOB I). BOEHNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binders for Loose Leaves of Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a binder designed for holding loose leaves of paper of any kind and for any desired purpose in book form until the object for which they are held together is accomplished, when they may be readily detached from their holder and have other leaves expeditiously and conveniently substituted therefor; and it consists of certain new and useful features of construction and combinations of parts especially devised to that end, all as hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure l is a section at the dotted line 1 l in Fig. 5 through a complete binder, opened, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a like View of the same closed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the metallic portions ofl the holder with the semirings thereof in the positions shown in Figs. l and 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan View of the parts shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section at the dotted line 5 5 in Fig. A of parts there shown. Fig. 6 is a section at the dotted line 6 6 in Fig. 3, showing one of the semirings thereof locked open to receive leaves thereon. 1
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A is a fiat, preferably rectangular, backplate having a single rectilinear corrugation A formed therein along its longitudinal center and perforated laterally by a plurality of horizontal openings A2, extendingtransversely therethrough and provided with Vertical semiring locking-notches A3 in their lower edges.
B represents bearing-lugs having bearings B therein and included and seated in the corrugation A in the back-plate A.
O is a longitudinally-slidable rock-shaft included in the corrugation A in the back-plate A and mounted in the bearings B in the lugs B therein.
D represents semirings corresponding in number with the horizontal openings A2 in the corrugation A of the back-plate A and rigidly secured by one end Dl of each thereof to the rock-shaft O and projecting' transversely therefrom and parallel to each other through suoli horizontal openings A2 in the corrugation A of the back-plate A and adapted to slide therein and to be rocked therefrom over into and be detained by their vertical locking-notches A3. E represents semirings counterparts of and corresponding in number with the semirings D and are fast mounted on the corrugation Al in the plate A parallel to each other and opposite to such corresponding semirings D when in their normal positions.
F is a spring coiled about the shaft O and included between one of the lugs B in the back-plate A and one of the semirings D, secured to such shaft, and normally acting through the latter to maintain the movable semirings D in operative relation to and engagement with their counterpart stationary semirings E, as shown in Figs. l and 2 and indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4.
G represents thin metallic clips secured, preferably by soldering, to the under side of the plate A, transversely thereto.
H is a thin iiexible strip, preferably of some strong woven fabric, and H is also a thin strip, preferably of some strong fibrous material-as, for instance, tar-board-and is preferably of the same length and width as the plate A. The strips H H are secured to the plate A, preferably in the following manner: The points of the clips G are bent at right angles to the plate A and parallel to each other and then inserted through the fabric H. The strip H next has melted glue applied to its under side and is then placed between the points of the clips G, and the latter are bent inward thereover, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
I represents iiexible covers, to the central portion of which the strips H H are attached by means of glue.
I' represents the linings of the covers and are pasted thereto.
Ihenever it is desired to place leaves J in the holder, the shaft O is slid endwise until the semirings D are opposite the notches A3 IOO in the openings A2 in the corrugation A,when such seiniringsD may be roch ed over thereinto and be thereby locked in the positions shown in Fig. 6 and indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The free ends of the semirings D E are neXt inserted through circular perforations K in the leaves J, and the semirings D are swung out of engagement with the notches A in the openings A2, and the action of the spring F will then restore the semirings D to the positions shown in Fig. 4, thereby securing the leaves J operatively in the holder.
Having fully described my invention, what claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. ln a binder for loose leaves of books, in
combination, a back-plate having a single rectilinear corrugation, formed therein along its longitudinal center, and perforated laterally by a plurality of horizontal openings extending transversely therethrough, and provided with vertical semiring locking-notches in their lower edges, and said corriigations having bearing-lugs included and seated therein, a longitiidinally-slidable rock-shaft, mounted in the bearing-lugs within the corrugation in the back-plate, semirings rigidly secured, by one end of each thereof, to the rock-shaft, and projecting transversely therefrom and parallel to each other through the openings in the corrugation of the back-plate, and adapted to slide therein and to be rocked therefrom over into, and be detained by, the vertical lockingnotches in the lower edges thereof, semirings, the counterparts of and corresponding in number with the hereinbefore-mentioned semirings and fast mounted, on the corrugation in the back-plate, parallel to each other and opposite to such corresponding semirings, when intheir normal positions, and a spring normally acting, through the longitudinally-slidable rock-shaft, to maintain the movable semirings in operative relation to and in engagement with their counterpart stationary semirings, substantially as described.
2. In a binder for loose leaves of books, in combination, a back-plate having a single rectilinear.corrugation, formed therein alongits longitudinal center, and perforated laterally by a plurality of horizontal openings extending transversely therethrough, and provided with vertical scmiring locking-notches in their lower edges, and said corrugations having bearing-lugs included and seated therein, a longitudinally-slidable rock-shaft, mounted in the bearing-lugs within the corrugation in the back-plate, semirings rigidly secured, by one end of each thereof, to the rock-shaft, and projecting transversely therefrom and parallel to each other through the openings in the corrugation of the back-plate, and adapted to slide therein and to be rocked therefrom over into, and be detained by, the vertical locking-notches in the lower edges thereof, semirings, the counterparts of and corresponding in number with the hereinbefore-mentioned semirings and fast mounted, on the eorriigation in the back-plate, parallel to each other and opposite to such corresponding semirings, when in their normal positions. and a spring normally acting, through the longitudinallyslidable rock-shaft, to maintain the movable semirings in operative relation to and in engagement with their counterpart stationary semirings, clips fast to the under side of the back-plate, a flexible strip, as woven fabric, wider than the back-plate and having the clips inserted therethrough, a strip of fibrous material, as tar-board, preferably of the same dimensions as the back-plate and clamped, together with the first-mentioned strip and by means of said clips, fast to the back-plate, and covers connected to the back-plate by means of such strips, substantially as described.
3. In a binder for loose leaves of books, in combination, a bach-plate A having a rectilinear corrugation A formed therein along its longitudinal center, and perforated by horizontal openings A2 extending transversely tliercth rough, and provided with vertical locking-notches As in their lower edges, and said corrugation having bearing-lugs B included and seated therein, a loiigitudinally-slidable rock-shaft C mounted in the bearing-lugs B within the corrugation A, semirings D rigidly secured, by one end of each thereof, to such rock-shaft C, and projecting transversely therefrom through the openings A2 in the corrugation A and adapted to slide therein and to be rocked therefrom over into, and be detained by, the locking-notches A3 in the lower edges thereof, semirings E, fast mounted on the corrugation A, parallel to each other and opposite to the semirings D, when in their normal positions, and a spring F normally acting, through the longitudinally slidable rock-shaft C, to maintain the movable semirings D in operative relation to and engagement with their counterpart semirings E, substantially as described.
