CLAMP FOR JAR CLOSURBS.

CLAMP FOR dAR-CLOSURES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1905.
Application filed December 17,190 L. Ser al No. 237,335.
To a, ll'iumt if may concern.-
Be it known that LWILLIAM H. Rrcuiinns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coudersport, in the county of Potter and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Jar-Closures, of which the following is z specification.
This invention relates to wire or similar clamp devices for attaching closures of jars or like receptacles; and the invention embodies a device of this class designed especially with a view to simplicity both in construction and operation in order to provide an effective means for closing a receptacle which may be manufactured at a minimum cost in its practical embodiment.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
WVhile the invention may b adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without dcparting from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the invention to a jar. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. showing the upper portion of the jar with the closure secured in position by means of the invention. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a plan view. Fig. is a perspective view of the clamp device alone.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The jar 1 shown in the drawings) is in general form substantially the same as the many receptacles of this kind now in use. At the upper or open end of the ar the same is provided with the usual annular flange 2. The closure 3 is of disk form and is adapted to receive a gasket in a peripheral groove 4 upon the under side thereof.
The invention involves the clamp device which is composed of a clamp member 5 and an operating member 6 therefor. The clamp being projected inwardly or toward each other at the lower extremities to form projections S. The clamp member is of a size sufficient to admit. of engagement of the projections 8 beneath the flange 2 of the jar l. The operating member 6 is preferably made of a single length of material, such as stout wire of suitable gage, and consists of a bail the end portions of which are looped about the clamp member 5, as shown at t). Adjacent the end portion 9 of the bail 6 the end portions thereof are bent laterally and curve to form cams 10 almost in contact with the downwardly-cxtending ends 7 of the clamp member aforesaid. The cams 10 are adapted to engage the upper side of the closure 3 when the bail or operating 1I10l11l)(1'fi is forced downwardly after the projections 8 have been engaged with the flangcQ of the jar 1. it will be understood that the member 6 is pivoted to the member by means of loops 9 and that the special construct-ion of the opcrating member such that the pressure upon the closure 3 is equally distributed over the surface thereof, affording a rigid, light, and inexpensive clamping means, answering all the requisites of a device of this class.
The under side of the flange 2 of the ar 1 is preferably provided with depressions or recesses 1]. at approximately opposite points in its length, and these recesses receive the projcctions S and obviate any likelihood of sliding of the clamp member 5 when the operating member is forced downwardly thereon.
hen the cams 10 have been caused to cooperate with the closure by forcing the operating member 6 downwardly, the spring engagement of these parts will hold the member 6 in its lowermost position, the cams being thrown in rear of the pivotal members 9, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2 of the draw ings.
The cams 10 co pcrate with an annular rib upon the upper side of the closure in such a manner as not to be displaced from proper engaging position.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In combination, a ar or like receptacle, a closure therefor, said jar being provided with an annular flange adjacent its mouth, a
clamp device comprising a clamp member In testimony whereof I affix my signature consisting of a bar having its ends bent doWnin presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. RICHARDS. [L.s.]
