COMBINATION SPIRIT-LEVEL AND CARPENTERS SQUARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1905.
Application filed February 20, 1905- Serial No. 246,468.
To all whom 7'2 may concern:
Be it known that l, GnAuLns G. "narunnm, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Spirit-Level and Carpenters Square, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combination spirit-levels and carpenters squares.
The objects of my invention are to provide a combination spirit-level and carpenters square whereby the necessity of using two tubes in the level for determining various lines is obviated and to which a carpentcrs square is movably secured for use with said level.
My invention consists of the novel arrangement and construction of parts described in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and claimed inthc appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side eleva-- tion of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. L is aview of the squareblade detached. Fig. 5 is a detail of the bedplate. Fig. 6 is a rear detail view of the liangcd hub or bearing. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of said hub or bearing. Fig. 8 is a detail view of the annular spirit-glass. Fig. 9 is a detail view of the plug which holds the spirit-glass in place. Fig. 10 is a side elevation of Fig. 9.
In said figures of the accompanying drawings, l is a frame or level" having a bedplate 2 secured to it by means of screws 3, which said bed-plate has a cup-shaped recess 4, in which is set a flanged hub 5, which forms a bushing and bearing for the ring 6 of the square-blade 7, said blade 7 having pointers 8 S for determining the angle of said blade by coinciding with certain graduations or degrees marked or set off on the face of the annular flange 5. The flanged hub 5 has also a recess # 1, in which is set the spirit-glass t), which is held in place by a plug 10, which is in turn held in place by a screw l1.
The blade 7 normally lies flat along the bed or side of the level; but when it is desired to use the blade fora square it is moved outwardly to the desired angle, which angle is determined by either of the pointers 8 8 pointing to or coinciding with the degrees laid off on the annular flange The blade or carpenters square T is free at its outer end, so that the same may be turned as desired on the flanged hub 5, as shown.
The glass tube contains an air-bubble in alcohol or other for the use of the device.
The lug shown in Fig. 5 intersecting the central circle therein is intended to engage the slot shown in Fig. (3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
l. in a combination spirit-level and carpenters square, the combination of a frame having a recess; a hub, having a flange bearing marks of graduation and an annular slot, set in such recess, a blade having marks of graduation and pointers allixed thereto and having a circular oriliee whereby said blade turns on such hub, a circular glass tube containing spirit and air set in such annular slot, and a plug affixed to said framefor retaining said glass tube in place, substantially as described.
2. In a combination spirit-level and carpenters square, the combination of a frame, sustaining a plate having a recess; a hub having a flange bearing marks of graduation and an annular slot, set in such recess, a blade having marks of graduation and pointers affixed thereto and having a circular orilice whereby said blade turns on such hub, 11 circular glass tube containii'ig spirit and air set in such annular slot, and a plug atlixed to said frame for retaining said glass tube in place, substantially as described.
3. in a combination spirit-level and carpenters square, the combination of a frame, a plate having a recess secured to said frame; a hub having a llange bearing marks of graduation and an annular slot, set in such recess, a blade having marks of graduation and pointers allixed thereto and having a circular orifice whereby said blade turns on such hub, a circular glass tube containing spirit and air set in such annular slot, and a plug atlixed to said frame for retaining said glass tube in place, substantially as described.
a. in a combination spirit-level and carpenters square, the combination of a frame sustaining a plate having a recess; a hub, having a flange bearing marks of graduation and ing said plug to said frame substantially as an annular slot, set in such recess, a blade described. 10 having marks of graduation and pointers af- In testimony whereof I afiix my signaturein fixed thereto and having a circular orifice presence of two Witnesses.
