Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1905.
Application filed November 28, 1904. Serial No. 234,489.
To (1// lr/mm if may (OIHI'I'IM lie it known that I. EowiNU. "asnnnux, a citizen of the United States, residing at i\lin neapolis, in the county of Ilennepin and State of .\linnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liar-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to car-couplers, and more particularly to those which are especially adapted for use on street-cars and other light passenger-coaches, and has for its object to improve the same in several particulars hereinafter noted.
The invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and delined in the claims.
The present coupler is designed on the general lines laid down by the Master Car-Builders Association, but has certain added features which cause two interlocked couplers to become rigidly connected 7 that is, connected against pivotal movements with respect to each other.
In the accompanying drawings, whichillustrate my invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Figure I is a plan view of the complete coupler. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken approximately on the line w .1 of Fig. 1, some parts being left in full; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line .1 .4 of Fig. 2. the pivoted knuckle being shown in full plan.
The coupler-hezul I has heavy lugs 2, to which the knuckle 3 is pivoted in the usual way by a vertical pivot-bolt 4c. The lockdog 5, which may be of the usual or any suitable construction, is mounted to move vertically in a suitable seat formed in the couplerhead I and when lowered of course operates on the tail of the knuckle to lock the said knuckle in its closed position. As shown, the coupler-head I has vcrtically-spaced rearwardly-projecting flanges 6, which constitute a stub draft-bar and which are adapted to be bolted or riveted to a longer draft-bar. (Not shown.) Opposite the lugs 2 the couplerhead I is formed with the usual hollow arm I. In the planes of the ears the couplerhead I is formed with the rigidly-secured and preferably integrally-cast buffer-webs 7, that extend across the outer face of the coupler and unite with the arm 1 thereof. At one side of the nose of the knuckle 3 the bull'er webs T are formed with pivotal semicircular depressions T. The extreme end of the arm I is flattened at 1" in line with the straight edges of the buffer-webs T. The knuckle 3 outward of its pivot is formed with a buffing-shoulder 3.
As shown by full and dotted lines in Fig. 3, when two couplers of the described character are coupled together the round outer surfaces of the hinged lugs 2 of the one coupler engage the depressions T of the webs 7 of the other coupler, the straight edges of the webs T of the two couplers are brought into close engagement, and the flattened-arm ends I" of the one coupler engage the shoulder 3 of the knuckle of the other coupler. The butling strains are therefore taken on the edges of the buffer-webs 7 and on the flattoned-arm ends I" and l ufling-shoulder 3 of the knuckle. \Yhen the two couplers are interlocked as above described, the engaged buffer-webs and other parts noted will hold the two couplers rigidly against pivotal movement that is, in axial alinement with each other. This is a feature desired in the service for which this coupler is desi ned.
In reference particularly to I ig. 2 it will be noted that at the outer end of the knuckle the vertical dimension is much less than the distance between the upper and lower bufferflanges T and, furthermore, that the said upper portion of the knuckle is tapered somewhat forward to further insure the entry of the outer end of the knuckle of the one coupler between the bulferllanges of the other coupler.
From what has been said it will of course be understood that the coupler d scribed is capable of IIIOdIIlOtltIOII within the scope of my invention, as herein set forth and claimed.
"hat .I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Iatcnt of the United States, is as follows:
I. In a car-coupler, a coupler-lieiul, a pivoted knuckle and a lock-dog, said knuckle having a shoulder outward of its pivot, positioned for ei'igagement with the arm of a coupled coupler, substantially as described.
2. A car-coupler comprisinga coupler-hczul, a pivoted knuckle and a lock-dog, said coupler-head having a transversely'extended buffer-web located out of the plane of the knuckle and engageable with the similar webs of the coupled coupler, to hold the interlocked coupler against pivotal movement, said web having a projecting lug and a lug-seat, the lug IIO of the web of one coupler being engageable with thelug-seat of the Web of another coupler, to'aline the two couplers, substantially as described.
3. A car-coupler comprising a coupler-head, a pivoted knuckle and a lock-dog, said coupler having a transversely-extended bufierweb located out of the plane of the knuckle, and said knuckle having outward of its pivot a buffer-shoulder adapted to be engaged with the arm of the coupled coupler, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. In a coupler, o1 the combination with a coupler-head having the arm 1, hinged lugs 2, and buffer-webs 7 extending in the planes of said lugs 2, and havingthe depressions 7, of a lock-dog, and a knuckle 3 pivoted to the hinged lugs 2 of said coupler-head, and hav- EDWIN O. WASHBURN.
